    • A locally flexible dilator sheath (10) for separating encapsulating tissue from an implanted cardiac electrical lead. The dilator sheath includes an elongated tubular member (11) of a rigid stainless steel material, which is sized for placement of the tubular member over a cardiac lead that is implanted in the vascular system of a patient. The distal end (13) of the rigid tubular member is beveled to ease the separation of extremely tough tissue that encapsulates an implanted cardiac lead. To ease insertion around curves in the vascular system of the patient, the elongated tubular member includes a relieved portion (14). The relieved portion includes a relief pattern (15) of apertures (16, 17, 19, 23) in the elongated tubular member. The relief apertures preferably include diametrically opposed slots (24, 25) that extend perpendicularly into the tubular member. Adjacent pairs (44, 45) of slots are circumferentially offset at 90 DEG angle (26) to add further lateral flexiblity to the relieved portion. A polyester shrink tube (41) surrounds the relief apertures to provide integrity to the tubular member should the tubular member fracture when separating encapsulating tissue from the implanted lead.

    • A two-piece surgical clip (12, 13) and applicator (100) for ligating a vessel. The surgical clip comprises a first tube (12) having a longitudinal slot (17) formed therein for receiving a second tube (13) into the passage (18) of the first tube and circumferentially ligating a vessel (11) positioned in a second channel (21) transverse to and communicating with the passage (18) of the first tube (12). An applicator (100) includes a main housing (101) having a vessel channel (106) for positioning the first tube (12) therein. The vessel channel (106) also includes vessel access opening (107, 122) for transversely positioning a vessel (11) through opening (19, 20) in the first tube (12) outer wall. An insertion mechanism (102) slides over the inserted vessel (11) and first tube (12) and securably positions a second tube (13) in the passage (18) of the first piece tube (12) for circumferentially ligating the vessel (11) positioned therebetween.
