    • A single electrical catheter for temporary or permanent cardiac stimulation, whether VDD or DDD, includes atrial and ventricular electrodes mounted on the same catheter. The distance between the two electrode groups depends on heart dimensions. The electrodes A, B, C used for atrial sensing and stimulations are located and connected in such a way, that A and C are positioned symmetrically about the central electrode B; A and C are electrically connected to each other and to a terminal of the atrial pacing device, while B is connected to the other terminal. Said electrode configuration allows to decrease the stimulation threshold and to increase the recording sensitivity of the atrial signals.

    • There is provided a system and method for treating cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial defibrillation, and in particular a method for providing temporary atrial defibrillation which involves insertion of only one defibrillation lead. A lead introducer (20) is provided having a sheath (22) with an electrode configured around the outside of the sheath (22) and a lumen (24) for receiving therethrough a standard defibrillation lead. After insertion of the introducer into a patient's vein and positioning it so that the introducer electrode is placed within the vein, a defibrillation lead is passed through the introducer lumen. The defibrillation lead carries at least one electrode (15), suitably an electrode spaced from its distal end so that it can be positioned in the patient's coronary sinus. When the introducer electrode and the defibrillation lead electrode are optimally placed, they are electrically connected to a defibrillation unit for generation and delivery of a defibrillation pulse or pulses across the two electrodes, thereby providing therapy against the atrial fibrillation. In a preferred embodiment, the introducer electrode is a very flexible coil (25), and is positioned in the patient's subclavian vein; the defibrillation lead electrode is positioned in the patient's coronary sinus. Alternately, the electrode can be any other conductor configuration which provides the desired surface area and flexibility, e.g., a braid or woven wire configuration.

    • A transvenous implantable defibrillation lead (10) includes a conductor (12) and inner and outer coaxial cylindrical electrodes (16, 20). The inner electrode (16) is connected to the conductor (12), and the outer electrode (20) is connected to a sheath (18) overlying the conductor in rotatable relationship thereto. The sheath is fixed to the outer cylindrical electrode so that rotation of the sheath relative to the conductor results in rotation of the inner and outer cylindrical electrodes relative to each other. The inner electrode has a plurality of hooks (22) extending generally transversely and tangentially thereto, with the hooks being biased such that the terminal ends of the hooks tend to spring outwardly from the inner electrode. The hooks (22) are constrained against the inner cylindrical electrode (16) by the outer cylindrical electrode (20), except that a window (24) in the outer electrode permits the hooks (22) to spring outwardly therethrough upon rotation of the outer electrode (20) relative to the inner electrode (16). Once the hooks are so exposed, rotation of the inner and outer electrodes in unison permits the hooks to engage cardiac tissue. The hooks (22) provide fixation as well as conducting electrical stimulus to the cardiac tissue.

    • An artificial retina device and a method for stimulating and modulating its function is diclosed. The device is comprised of plural multi-phasic microphotodiode subunits, which, when surgically implanted into the subretinal space, may allow useful formed articifial vision to develop. One device, called an MMRI-4 (8), is configured in a flattened cubic shape and transduces light into electric currents to stimulate the retina. The MMRI-4 comprises two subunits in a PiN configuration (10a) and two subunits in an NiP configuration (10b), both present on each of the flattened sides, thereby allowing induced sensations regardless of which side faces incident light. Filter layers (20, 22) disposed on the PiN and NiP configurations allow for visible and infrared light respectively to induce currents. An Adaptive Imaging Retinal Stimulation System (AIRES), with a Projection and Tracking Optical System (PTOS), which may be worn as a headset, is also disclosed.

    • A method of manufacturing a medical electrical lead and, in particular, a method of manufacturing a sintered porous platinized electrode used in a steroid eluting pacing cardiac lead which offers increased dimensional and shape consistency over previously used manufacturing methods. The medical electrical lead comprises an electrical conductor covered by an insulating sleeve, a connector coupled to one end of said electrical conductor, an electrode coupled to the opposite end of the electrical conductor for conducting electrical energy to and from a body. The method of manufacturing the electrode consists primarily of mixing a conductive particulate material and a binder to form a slurry, introducing a distal end of a substrate into a mold, creating a negative pressure in the mold, injecting the slurry into the mold to form a mass of conductive particulate material on the substrate, and sintering the mold, substrate and conductive particulate material to form an electrode.
