    • A member having a cavity comprising an insert for sealing and acoustic damping, comprising at least two carrier plates intersecting along a line parallel to the cavity axis, and this insert as such. Each carrier plate has two plate surfaces, a longitudinal edge running essentially parallel to the longitudinal cavity axis, and a front and a rear edge running essentially perpendicular to the longitudinal cavity axis, placed in the longitudinal cavity in a way that the perpendicular plate axes of the carrier plates are perpendicular to the longitudinal cavity axis. The inserted insert divides the longitudinal cavity in at least three subsections which are parallel to the longitudinal cavity axis. The carrier plates are covered on one or more plate surface(s) with a layer of a thermally expandable material in a way that after expansion of the material all the subsections of the cavities are completely filled with the expanded material, whereby the thermally expandable material expands by at least 1000 % when heated at a temperature in the range of from 130 to 220 0 C. Methods to make these inserts and methods to seal cavities using these inserts are also claimed.

    • A cavity filler insert for use in a cavity of a structural member is disclosed. According to one embodiment of the invention, the cavity filler insert is substantially planar in shape and includes a carrier, a thermally expandable material operably coupled with and supported by at least a portion of the carrier and extending at least around substantially the entire periphery of said cavity filler insert, and an attachment member for securing the cavity filler insert to the structural member. Once activated by heating so as to cause the expandable material to foam, the cavity filler insert effectively reduces both air-borne and structure-borne noise by dampening sound and vibration within hollow portions of vehicles and the like.
