    • A communications system provides a robust and fast inter-base station handoff mechanism, e.g. for networks using Enhanced Base Stations (EBS) equipment. A method for connecting a mobile device to a destination base station in the wireless communications system, may include steps of receiving a mobile device measurement report, transferring context information from a serving base station to possible target base stations, and receiving admission control information from possible target base stations. A priority list of the possible target base stations is calculated and sent to the mobile device. The mobile device connects to one or more of possible target base stations according to the priority list. The method may also entail receiving a release message from one of the possible target base stations to which the mobile device has successfully established a wireless connection, to allow release of resources of the prior serving base station.

    • Multimedia message service (MMS) communications directly between mobile stations avoid interactions with a MMS Center (MMSC). In the examples, the originating station sends a short message service (SMS) message notifying the destination mobile station of the availability of the MMS message. This message provides an IP address of the originating station and an identifier for retrieval of the MMS message. In response, the destination mobile station sends back a packet message using the IP address of the originating station and the identifier, to request retrieval of the MMS message. The request message also includes an IP address for packet communication with the destination station. The originating mobile station uses that address for packet communication of the MMS message to the destination mobile station. In the examples, the destination station sends the MMS message to a regional node, for possible transcoding and/or to facilitate billing.

    • A femto cell at a customer premises, such as an IP-based femto Base Transceiver System (IP-BTS), can be configured as a "private access" node intended to service a limited set of mobile stations. However, mobile stations not associated with the private femto cell may acquire and lock onto the femto BTS. To avoid service blockages in such cases, the private femto BTS will allow call access attempts by, and call deliveries to, a non-associated mobile station, despite the "private access" configuration. However, upon completion of call set-up, the non-associated mobile station is directed to initiate handoff, from the private femto cell coverage provided by the femto BTS into a cell coverage of a base station of the macro network, to conserve femto cell resources for use in servicing calls of the associated mobile station(s).

    • A method of sending a recommendation to a customer's terminal device includes creating pairs of identifiers based on on-line activities of a group of users. Each pair contains a first and second identifier for items acquired and also acquired by a user. The unique pairings of identifiers are tallied to obtain their counts. The counts are then assigned weights so that the highest counted pairs for each first identifier have equal weight. Unique pairings that contain first identifiers in a list of identifiers derived from a customer's on-line activities are extracted with their counts. The unique second identifiers in the extracted pairings are compiled and the weighted counts are summed to form, based on the summed weighted counts, a list of recommendations. The list is then transmitted, from a computer through a communication network to the customer's terminal device, which presents the list as the recommendation to the customer.

    • Identification of radio coverage of a mobile station (MS) via a pico cell, such as an IP- BTS in a user premises (e.g. residence or business customer location), enables a mobile/wireless service provider to differentiate between coverage under a pico cell and coverage under a macro network. In a disclosed example, when the MS requests registration/authentication through a pico cell, a related signaling message includes a pico cell identifier (pID). A home location register (HLR) is provisioned with a pID, so that the HLR can decide to accept or reject the registration/authentication requests. For example, if the particular MS is provisioned for services from a specific pico cell, the HLR will grant the registration/authentication and allow the network to process calls for the mobile station through the identified pico cell. This enables the provider to allow discounted services through pico cell, e.g. as a replacement for a landline.

The metadata of the file and/or the metadata in the database may include one or more of pixel information, histogram information, image recognition information and audio information for each individual frame.
