    • A method (500) for reducing a power consumption of a display having the steps of comparing (515) a plurality of pixel bit values in an image; determining (520) a hamming distance between a number of bits of substantially adjacent pixels; and modifying (525) one or more pixel bit values based on said determination to reduce a number of data transitions.A reduction in hamming distance, between adjacent pixels of an image to be displayed, reduces the data-line transmissions required for displaying the image. This, in turn, reduces the power consumption of a device in which the present invention is implemented. This is particularly advantageous when the image does not change for prolonged periods of time, and is continuously being refreshed. The present invention produces significantly improves image quality compared to a truncation approach for a similar reduction in data-line transmission.

    • A method of refreshing an image on a display device includes receiving an image to be displayed (810) at a display (110); processing said received image to obtain at least one image parameter relating to said image to be displayed (810); and varying a rate (930) at which said displayed image is refreshed based on said image parameter. A video or image display device, and a display driver, have also been described.This provides the following advantages that the refresh rate is constantly being varied in response to the images being displayed so as to constantly minimise the power consumption of the display device without noticeable flickering of the display device. Furthermore, the quality of the image is maintained at a continuous level, irrespective of the changes in, for example the complexity or number of colours used in a particular image.

    • A method (900) for processing image or video data for a display includes separating (905, 920) a stream of image or video data into a block of pixels. Each pixel within the block of pixels comprises a first sequence of pixel bit values for a colour component of the image or video and one or more bits to be discarded. The method comprises determining (950, 960) for the block of pixels, a binary value of the one or more bits to be discarded, and modifying (955, 965) the first sequence of pixel bit values as a block of pixels, in response to the determined binary value to form a reduced number of pixel bit values to represent the colour component of a pixel within the block of pixels.This provides the advantage in that colour information typically lost when discarding pixel bits is reused to improve the image quality.
