    • Television systems comprising tuners (1), controllers (2) for controlling tuners (1), and stages (3) for receiving tuned signals from tuners (1) and for supplying control signals to controllers (2), use time-consuming automatic fine tuning signals while high speed tuning. By using lock signals (53) from phase-locked-loops (31) in stages (3) as control signals, an indication whether a channel is active or not can now be got much quicker due to lock signals being much faster available than automatic fine tuning signals. By using synchronization signals (54) from synchronization generators (4) as further control signals, a further indication is got. In a fast tuning mode, frequencies nearby active channels are detected, and in a fine tuning mode, channel frequencies are identified. According to the basic idea, lock signals originating from phase-locked-loops (31) in stages (3) can give first indications whether a channel is active or not, preferably and further advantageously in combination with second indications based upon synchronization signals (54).

    • The display device has a cathode ray tube (T), which has an electron gun (G) for generating an electron beam and an outer conductive layer (AD). A video processing circuitry (VP) provides a video signal (Vo) having a black level (BLR, BLG, BLB) to a video amplifier (VA) for modulating the electron beam. The video processing circuitry (VP) has black level controlling circuitry (BL) for controlling the black level (BLR, BLG, BLB) of the video signal (Vo). A sensing circuit (S) senses a black current level of the electron beam corresponding to the black level of the video signal (Vo) and feeds back information about the black current level to the black level controlling circuitry (BL) for stabilizing the black current level. The sensing circuit (S) is coupled to a node (X) to which the outer conductive layer (AD) and one of the output terminals of a high-tension generator (H) are coupled.

    • Terminals (1) like television receivers for displaying video signals comprise video processors (2) for processing said video signals and controllers (6) for in response to control signals controlling said processing. These terminals (1) are provided with selectors (10) for selecting states in dependence of video signal parameters comprising signal-to-noise-ratios and/or signal-strengths. The selectors (10) comprise generators (15) for, per selected state, automatically generating said control signals defining a contrast, a sharpness, a black/blue stretch, a coring, a pre/overshoot-ratio, a peaking, a histogram, a low-noise amplification. Detectors (11) for detecting the switching on of terminals (1) and/or the selection of next television channels are used in combination with (de)activators (12) for in response to detection results (de)activating at least parts of said selectors (10), to get video signals to be displayed which are always processed optimally. The user has the option of switching said selector (10) on and off, and of overruling and getting his/her individual preferences, with a graphical display that can be disabled/enabled.
