    • A hospital bed, trolley or lifter includes a steering wheel (6) mounted on a wheel support arm (2) extending from which is a ratchet mechanism (7) which can co-operate with a tooth (8) of an adjustment mechanism. When the tooth (8) is engaged in the ratchet teeth of the ratchet mechanism (7) the wheel (6) can be raised and held in the raised position until the tooth (8) is disengaged. The wheel adjustment mechanism also includes an eccentric wheel (11) for raising the tooth (8) in periodic manner to cause periodic raising of the wheel (6). A damper (3) is attached to the support arm (2) for dampening the drop of the wheel (6) from the tooth (8) is disengaged. A mechanism provides a steering wheel which can be held at intermediate positions between its uppermost and lowermost positions and which can be held in an engaged position in a plurality of different positions relative to casters of the bed or trolley. The system can also make use of a small capacity drive motor whilst still retaining speed of operation.

    • A patient transfer and training aid (100) includes a chassis (10) to which a lifting unit (12) is attached. The lifting unit (12) includes a lifting arm assembly (115) and an active foot support assembly (111) fixed to the chassis (10). A patient can activate the foot support assembly (111) to provide vibratory movement of the foot support assembly (111) in order to provide muscle toning and training able to assist in the recovery and rehabilitation of the patient.     • A patient sling (10) is formed of plastics sheet or moulded plastics or textile material (16) having a back support portion (12) and a patient seat support portion (14). Two straps (30, 32) are coupled to respective side flanges (18, 20) of the back rest support (12), while two straps (36, 38) are coupled to respective side flanges (22, 24) the seat support portion (14) and connect to the straps (30, 32). The straps (36, 38) can be adjusted in length and also detached from the upper straps (30, 32) in order to adjust the configuration of the seat support portion (14). The seat support portion (14) includes a cut out (44) for assisting a patient in effecting bodily functions and fold lines (52, 54, 56) can also enable the seat support portion (14) to be either partially folded or fully folded back in order to assist a patient in dressing and undressing, while continuing to be retained and supported by the back rest support portion (12).
