    • A toolholder (50) with a controllable critical angle, such as a lead, trailing, rake or clearance angles, includes a tool spindle (42a) for retaining the toolholder in a tool rest (42) of a machine tool. The machine tool (10) includes at least one linear axis, for example, three mutually perpendicular axes, a rotary axis and a rotation axis. The rotary axis and/or rotation axis is controllable to move to a specified position in synchronization with a movement of one of the linear axes. An adaptor (54) supports a cutting tool (56) that is retained in the adaptor by a clamp (58). The cutting tool (56) defines a critical angle, such as a lead angle, a trailing angle, a rake angle and a flank clearance angle, wherein the critical angle is corrected as a vector of movement of at least one of the linear axis is changed. In addition, the cutting tool (56) can be positioned on opposite side of a centerline of rotation of the workpiece to effectively double the life of the cutting tool. A method of controlling a toolholder (50) is also disclosed.

    • A metalcutting insert (150) that is useful in chipforming and material removal from a workpiece. The metalcutting insert (150) includes a metalcutting insert body (152, 154), which includes a cutting edge (160) having at least one discrete cutting location (161A-161F).     • A cutting insert (150) includes a milling insert body (172) defining a first part of a rake surface (178) of the cutting insert and a core (670) defining a second part of the rake surface. A coolant passage (642) is formed when the core (670) is inserted into the central aperture of the milling insert body (172). The milling insert body (172) could be made from a relatively expensive material, while the core (670) could be made from a relatively inexpensive material, thereby providing significant cost savings.

    • A toolholder (20) comprises a body portion (32), a support member assembly (33) mounted to the body portion and an insert-receiving cartridge (36) removably received in the support member. The insert-receiving cartridge (36) includes a pocket (38) for mounting a cutting insert (40) thereon. The support member assembly (33) includes a bore and the insert-receiving cartridge (36) includes a shank capable of being received in the bore. The combination of the insert-receiving cartridge (36) and the cutting insert (40) forms a cutting tool for a particular cutting operation. In one embodiment, the cutting tools are radially mounted to a side periphery of the body portion (32) such that the vertical axis of the cutting tool is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis (L) of the toolholder (20).
