    • A carburetor (C) has an induction passage (P) and a throttle valve (T) positioned in the induction passage. A staging valve (S), also positioned in the induction passage, is closed during cranking of an engine whereby a suitably rich air-fuel mixture is supplied to the engine to start it. The staging valve moves to a first open position when the engine starts and toward a fully open position as the engine warns up. Means (19) limit opening movement of the staging valve to a second open position which is intermediate its first and its fully open positions. This limits the usable air capacity of the carburetor. A staging means (35) responsive to the movement of the throttle valve past a predetermined open position enables the staging valve to move freely between its second open position and a more fully open position solely in response to air demand. The staging valve is freely movable to its fully open position when the throttle valve is fully opened and this increases the usable air capacity of the carburetor to its maximum.

    • Apparatus (1) for controlling the air-fuel ratio of a mixture supplied by a carburetor (C) during wide-open throttle conditions. The quantity of fuel or air used to form the mixture sup plied to the engine (E) is controlled and an engine operation parameter is sensed. An electrical signal indicative of wide open is developed and processed by a signal processor (11) together with electrical signals representing other engine operating parameters. The signal characteristics of a control signal are modified so as to vary the air-fuel ratio of the mixture supplied to the engine.

    • A device which acts as a retainer to hold a butterfly valve stem (26) in the valve body upon shearing or breaking of the stem. Conventional butterfly valve stems are typically weakened in certain areas such as, for example, the areas where pins secure the butterfly valve member to the stem. If unusually high torque is placed on such a stem, shear failure may occur and fluid pressure in the valve body may tend to blow the sheared stem out of the stem bore. This problem is solved by the instant retaining device which includes pins (44) extending radially from the stem (26) which engage in abutting relation a support ring (64) mounted in a groove (56) in the bore and retained therein by a split retainer ring (70) to restrain any outward movement of the stem.
