    • There is described a process for preparing an aqueous dispersion of a polyurethane A (PUD) the process comprising the steps of: (a) reacting components one and three (and two and four where present) to form an acidic isocyanate terminated prepolymer that comprises anionic or potentially anionic functional groups thereon; where: (1) component one comprises 10 to 80% by weight of at least one polyisocyanate optionally containing at least one anionic or potentially anionic dispersing group; (2) optional component two comprises up to 15% by weight of at least one isocyanate reactive polyol containing at least one anionic or potentially anionic dispersing group; (3) component three comprises 15 to 85% by weight of at least one isocyanate reactive hydrophobic polyol other than component two if present, and having a weight average molecular weight greater than or equal to 500 Daltons; and (4)optional component four comprises up to 20% by weight of at least one isocyanate reactive polyol other than component three and two if present and having a weight average molecular weight less than 500 Daltons; where if component two is not present component one contains at least one anionic or potentially anionic dispersing group; where the mixture used in step (a) is substantially free of volatile amines and N- alkyl pyrrolidinones; (b) adding to the reaction mixture from step (a) an alkali metal neutralising agent in an amount from 0.05 to 6 parts by weight substantially to neutralise the isocyanate terminated prepolymer obtained from step (a); and (c) reacting the neutralised prepolymer from step (b) with an active hydrogen compound to extend the chain of the prepolymer to form an aqueous dispersion of polyurethane A. In the absence of a cross-linkable vinyl polymer B the aqueous dispersion of polyurethane A is crosslinkable preferably by a crosslinking method selected from: silane-crosslinking, UV-crosslinking, auto-oxidative crosslinking, isocyanate crosslinking, carbodiimide crosslinking and/or Schiff base cross-linking between carbonyl groups and polyamine and/or polyhydrazide compounds. PUDs obtained from this method and coating compositions comprising the PUD with a vinyl polymer B are also described where the vinyl polymer may also be crosslinked especially where the polyurethane A is not.

    • The present invention relates to a radiation curable aqueous coating composition comprising a dispersion of a chain extended polyurethane which dispersion comprises (a) a polyurethane-urea polymer comprising (i) acryloyl groups present in an amount of at least 2.0 mmol per g of the polyurethane-urea polymer; and (ii)urea groups present in an amount of at least 0.35 milli-equivalents (meq) per g of the polyurethane-urea polymer; (b) optionally a multifunctional ethylenically unsaturated compound unreactive towards isocyanates, in an amount, where present, of up to 40% by weight of components (a) and (b); and (c)a neutralizing agent; where the polyurethane-urea polymer (component (a)) is obtained by (I) the reaction of at least the following polyurethane precursors: at least one polyisocyanate (a1), two or more polyols (a2) and at least one isocyanate reactive compound (a3) to obtain a polyurethane prepolymer, where the isocyanate and hydroxy groups on the polymer precursors (a1), (a2) and (a3) are present in a respective mole ratio (NCO to OH) of at least 1.35, and (II) by reacting the polyurethane prepolymer with an active hydrogen chain extending compound and optionally with water to obtain the polyurethane-urea polymer (a), where (a1) the amount of polyisocyanates (a1) is from 10 to 80% by weight; (a2) the two or more polyols being an Anionic Polyol A, a Polyether Polyol B and optionally a High MW NCO-Reactive Polyol C and optionally a Low MW NCO-Reactive Polyol D; (a3) the isocyanate reactive compounds are compounds having an average of less than 1.2 groups reactive towards isocyanate and an average of at least one acryloyl group, the compounds being other than (a2A), (a2B), (a2C) and (a2D) and where the amount of isocyanate reactive compound is from 5 to 60% by weight; where the weight % of components (a1), (a2A), (a2B), (a2C), (a2D), (a3) and (b) are calculated based on the total of components (a) and (b) being 100%.

    • The present invention relates to an aqueous coating composition comprising dispersed polyurethane-vinyl polymer hybrid particles wherein i. the polyurethane-vinyl polymer hybrid is obtained by free-radical polymerization of at least one vinyl monomer in the presence of a polyurethane, ii. the polyurethane is obtained by the reaction of at least (I) an isocyanate- terminated polyurethane prepolymer and (II) at least one active-hydrogen containing chain extending compound, wherein the isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymer is obtained by the reaction of at least one polyol with at least one polyisocyanate, wherein from 50 to 100 wt.% of the total amount of the polyisocyanates used to form the polyurethane are aromatic polyisocyanates, iii. the polyurethane-vinyl polymer hybrid is ketone functional and contains from 50 to 1000 mmol of ketone groups per 1000 g polyurethane-vinyl polymer hybrid, preferably from 75 to 500 mmol of ketone groups per 1000 g polyurethane-vinyl polymer hybrid, more preferably from 150 to 400 mmol of ketone groups per 1000 g polyurethane-vinyl polymer hybrid, iv. the ketone groups of the polyurethane-vinyl polymer hybrid are present in the polyurethane and in the vinyl polymer, v. the weight ratio of the polyurethane to the vinyl polymer in the polyurethane- vinyl polymer hybrid ranges from 90:10 to 35:65, vi. the polyurethane-vinyl polymer hybrid has an acid value from 7 to 60 mg KOH/g polyurethane-vinyl polymer hybrid, preferably from 9 to 40 mg KOH/g polyurethane-vinyl polymer hybrid and most preferably from 12 to 25 mg KOH/g polyurethane-vinyl polymer hybrid, vii. the aqueous coating composition comprises a dihydrazide functional compound (containing two hydrazide groups (O=C-NHNH2)) with a molar mass below 1000 g/mole, viii. the molar ratio of hydrazide groups (present in the dihydrazide functional compound (vii)) to ketone groups is from 1.5 to 0.1 (preferably from 1.2 to 0.2, more preferably from 0.9 to 0.25).

    • The present invention relates to an aqueous coating composition comprising dispersed polymer particles, wherein (i) the dispersed polymer particles are polyurethane-vinyl polymer hybrid particles obtained by free-radical polymerization of at least one vinyl monomer in the presence of a polyurethane, (ii) the polyurethane and the vinyl polymer in the hybrid particles are present in a weight ratio of polyurethane to vinyl polymer ranging from 1:1 to 20:1, (iii) the polyurethane is the reaction product of at least the following components: (a) from 5 to 40 wt.% of at least one organic difunctional isocyanate, (b) from 0.5 to 4 wt.% of an isocyanate-reactive compound containing ionic or potentially ionic water-dispersing groups having a molecular weight of from 100 to 500 g/mol, (c) from 40 to 80 wt.% of at least one diol having a molecular weight from 500 to 5000, (d) from 0 to 10 wt.% of at least one active-hydrogen chain extending compound with a functionality of at least 2 (other than water), (e)from 0 to10 wt.% of at least one diol having a molecular weight below 500 g/mol, where the amounts of (a), (b), (c), (d) and (e) are given relative to the total amount of components used to prepare the polyurethane from which the building blocks of the polyurethane are emanated, and where the isocyanate and hydroxy groups on the components used to prepare the polyurethane are present in a respective mole ratio (NCO to OH) in the range of from 0.8:1 to 5:1, preferably from 1.05:1 to 5:1 and even more preferably from 1.1:1 to 3.5:1.
