A thermal heating element is located proximate the distal end of the catheter shaft. In addition, a phase-change cooling mechanism is configured to extract heat away from the thermal heating element. The phase-change cooling mechanism involves vaporization of a liquid refrigerant circulated to the distal end of the catheter shaft through the first lumen into a gas and exhausting the gas to the proximal end of the catheter shaft through the second lumen.
