    • This invention aims to provide a material to be used for the production of components used in the construction industry such as construction blocks, wall panels, floor and roof tiles, lintels. The material is a paper concrete made with 50% to 90% of recycled paper in the base mixture. This invention also aims to provide a process for making a construction block with the base mixture of paper concrete. The process for making the lightweight building blocks with this paper concrete has three main steps with two stages each. The two first steps of the process include the preparation of the raw material and the mixture, while the following step aims to achieve a construction block by forming and compressing the mixture. Thereafter, there are possibilities for producing these blocks with different colours by adding pigment to the paper pulp during its treatment and adding artistic moulds on the block making machine during the forming stage.

    • The invention provides a method of making a mineral fibre product (23) comprising the steps of: (a) forming an air laid web (1 ) of mineral fibres and heat -curable binder on a permeable conveyor (2) and transporting the web on the conveyor, wherein the web has a longitudinal direction Y which is in the direction of transport of the web and the web has upper and lower major surfaces and the lower major surface is in contact with the conveyor and the web has a transverse direction X which is substantially parallel to the major surfaces and substantially perpendicular to longitudinal direction Y, and the fibres of the web are substantially oriented in the XY plane; (b) cutting the web (1 ) in the XY plane to form at least one core layer (8) and at least one covering layer (9); (c) passing the core layer (8) or each of the core layers (8) through a first curing oven (10) so as to cure the binder; (d) cutting the core layer (8) or each of the core layers (8) in either the longitudinal direction Y or the transverse direction X to form lamellae (13), reorienting each lamella by 90° and joining the reoriented lamellae (13) to form a lamellar core section (14) which has upper and lower major surfaces; (e) placing the covering layer (9) or covering layers (9) onto a major surface or major surfaces of the lamellar core section (14) to obtain a covered lamellar core section (20); and (f) passing the covered lamellar core section (20) through a second curing oven (22) to form a mineral fibre product (23).

    • Chromogenic substrates for β-D-glucuronidase activity comprising monoglucuronides of some 1,2-dihydroxyaromatic derivatives. When cleaved these form soluble coloured conjugates with multivalent metal ions such as iron ions. The substrates may be used in conjunction with chromogenic substrates for other enzymes in microbial detection and identification especially involving liquid media. Microbes can be grown in the presence of the substrates and the compounds providing the metal ion. The substrates are particularly useful for detecting β-D-glucuronidase-positive E. coli . Some of the substrates are new compounds, these having the formula II: wherein X 2 is independently selected from the group consisting of H, CH 3 , C 2 -C 6 alkyl, a metal cation and a non-metal cation; wherein Y 2 is independently selected from the group consisting of H, a metal cation and a non-metal cation; wherein R 21 is H; wherein R 24 is H or NO 2 ; and wherein R 22 and R23 are H or one is OH and the other is H, or R 22 and R 23 together form the group VII: -CR 25 =CR 26 -CR 27 =CR 28 - VII; wherein R25 to R28 are independently selected from H, OH, C 1 -C 8 alkyl, C 1 - C 8 alkoxy, C 1 -C 8 hydroxyalkyl, halogen, nitro, C 2 -C 24 acyl, C 2 -C 24 acyloxy, C 7 -C 24 aralkyl, C 6 -C 24 aryl, sulfonyl and amido, provided that any vicinal groups R 25 -R 28 are not both OH.
