    • A calibration device (30) for a machine tool is described that includes a base (36) attachable to a machine tool and a calibration artefact (32), such as a sphere of known radius. A deflection mechanism attaches the calibration artefact to the base and allows movement of the calibration artefact (32) relative to the base (36) when an external force is applied to the calibration artefact (32). The deflection mechanism also maintains the calibration artefact (32) in a defined rest position relative to the base (36) in the absence of an applied external force. A sensor (46) is provided for sensing the extent of movement of the calibration artefact (32) relative to the base (36). A method of using the device (30) with a reference tool to accurately determine a position of a calibration artefact (32) is also described.

    • Apparatus for digitising an impedance is described that comprises a first impedance element (22; 122) having a first impedance (C1;A1) that varies with a property to be measured and a second impedance element (24; 124) having a second impedance (C2;A2). The apparatus also includes a drive signal generator (26,30) for applying a first alternating drive signal (44) to the first impedance element (22; 122) and a second alternating drive signal (46) to the second impedance element (24; 124). An analogue-to-digital converter, ADC (42; 142), receives a resultant signal (41;52; 141 ) comprising the combination of the signals produced by the application of the first and second alternating drive signals (44,46) to the first and second impedance elements (22,24; 122, 124). The first alternating drive signal (44) is phase shifted relative to the second alternating drive signal (46) such that the resultant signal (41;52;141) received and sampled by the ADC (42; 142) sequentially relates to the sum of, and the difference between, the first and second impedances. The apparatus also comprises a signal separator (56;156A,156B) that receives sample values from the ADC (42; 142) and generates a sum channel (58; 158A) and a difference channel (60; 160A) therefrom.

    • A 'go, no-go' method is described for determining whether the dimensions of an object, such as a workpiece (40), conform to tolerance. The method uses a measurement probe, such as a touch trigger, analogue, or non-contact probe, mounted on a measuring apparatus such as a coordinate measuring machine, machine tool, or a lathe. The method comprises the step of driving the measurement probe around a path relative to the object, said path being based on a tolerance of the object. The path relative to the object may include at least a first path (46) based on the maximum tolerance of the object and a second path (44) based on the minimum tolerance of the object. The method additionally comprises the steps of monitoring any probe measurement data acquired by the measurement probe as the probe is driven around the path, and indicating if the dimensions of the object do not conform to tolerance only if there is a change in state of the probe measurement data that is acquired as the measurement probe is driven around the path.

    • Contact sensing probe apparatus (2) is described that comprises a workpiece contacting stylus (6), a transducer (8;108) mechanically coupled to the stylus (6) and an oscillator (30,31) for supplying an alternating current to the transducer (8;108) to induce vibration of the stylus (6). A contact sensor is also provided for monitoring the phase difference between the voltage supplied to the transducer (8;108) and the current flow to the transducer. The oscillator (30,31) is arranged to supply the transducer (8;108) with an alternating current of a first frequency during contact sensing. This first frequency (46) is selected to induce mechanical resonance but to be away from the maximum (40) of the mechanical resonance peak. The probe may be used with co-ordinate positioning machines, such as portable articulated measuring arms, co-ordinate measuring machines (CMM) and the like.
