摘要： A mixed culture of Dehalococcoides species is provided that has an ability to catalyze the complete dechlorination of polychlorinated ethenes such as PCE, TCE, cDCE, 1,1 -DCE and vinyl chloride as well as halogenated ethanes such as 1,2-DCA and EDB. The mixed culture demonstrates the ability to achieve dechlorination even in the presence of high source concentrations of chlorinated ethenes.

摘要： Disclosed are methods and devices for the engineering, formation, and post-formation handling of absorbent polymeric materials. Devices intended for use in a fluid environment that include an absorbent polymeric material can be formed and processed to ensure that upon installation of the device, the polymeric material can not only have the desired physical characteristics for the intended use, but can also be pre-equilibrated for the environment in which the device will be utilized. In particular, the polymeric materials can be formed with particular characteristics such that, upon absorption of a fluid, the characteristics will alter in a predetermined way to provide the materials within target specifications during use. In addition, the materials can be stored in a fluid so as to exhibit the desired operating characteristics immediately upon installation. In one particular embodiment, the invention is directed to biocompatible, implantable devices designed for use in vivo.

摘要： Lipophilic compounds extracted from cell growth mediums, particularly lysophospholipids are used to solubilize single-walled nanotubes. The naturally occurring lysophospholipids were found to readily bond to the exterior wall of the single- walled nanotubes to enhance the biocompatibility of the single- walled nanotubes in therapeutic and diagnostic conditions. The solubilization protocol is simple, highly efficient, and results in a population of coated single- walled nanotubes which are highly stable.

摘要： A thin film laser is provided in which a peak wavelength of the thin film laser can be film laser dynamically tuned by applying a colloidal array reflector on a gain material, such as material doped with a laser dye. The dye-doped gain material is disposed on an optically reflective substrate to form the thin film laser. An excitation source optically pumps a laser light at the thin film laser, and the laser light is reflected by the optically reflective substrate. The laser light reverses direction and provides optical feedback to achieve lasing of the dye.

摘要： Disclosed is a process for modification of a substrate so as to form an ultrahydrophobic surface on the substrate. Also disclosed are surface-modified substrates that can be formed according to the disclosed processes. The process includes attachment of a multitude of nano- and/or submicron-sized structures to a surface to provide increased surface roughness. In addition, the process includes grafting a hydrophobic material to the surface in order to decrease the surface energy and decrease wettability of the surface. The combination of increase surface roughness and decreased surface energy can provide an ultrahydrophobic surface on the treated substrate.

摘要： Fluid compositions and methods for lubrication of mammalian joints are disclosed, including both natural and artificial fluids. Synovial fluid acts to lubricate the bearing surfaces of bones and bone-like structures which are held in frictional contact within biological joints. Such fluids may be used to treat arthritic, injured, and diseased joints. Synovial fluid containing a dextran-based hydrogel with lipids provides enhanced rheological and tribological properties of such a fluid. Phospholipids are particularly useful in dextran-based compositions for synovial fluid. One phospholipid that can be used advantageously in synovial fluid is dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC).
