    • A catalyst carrier comprising a honeycomb body (1) consisting of sheet metal layers (2). An axial recess (4) thereof and the sheet metal layers (2) are at least partially structured in such a way that the honeycomb body (1) is provided with channels (3) through which a waste gas can flow. The catalyst carrier also comprises an outer jacket (9) which has one edge (30) and an axial recess (11). The axial recess (11) is smaller than the axial recess (4) of the honeycomb body and the outer jacket is at least joined to the honeycomb body in at least one axial partial area (12). The catalyst carrier further comprises a sleeve whose axial length is smaller than the axial extension of the honeycomb body (1). The sleeve is arranged on an outer area of the honeycomb body, close to a front side, and is provided with an inner covering surface which is joined to end areas of the sheet metal layers of the honeycomb body located on the front face in a radially outer position. The honeycomb body protrudes above the edge (10) of the outer jacket (9) and the protruding section (7) thereof is surrounded by the sleeve (13), thereby avoiding stress from occurring between the honeycomb body and the outer tube even when subjected to high temperatures.

    • The invention relates to a honeycomb arrangement (1) for reducing the transfer of heat from a honeycomb (3) to a housing (2) by heat radiation, using a special intermediate layer (7). The inventive arrangement also prevents the intermediate layer (7) from eroding on the front faces. The intermediate layer (7) has a plurality of layers (8, 9, 10) consisting of at least one metal foil (9) and at least one layer (8; 10) of ceramic material, and is preferably made up of a heat-insulating layer (8), a metal film (9) and a swelling mat (10), the ends of the metal foil (9) covering at least one of the layers (8, 10) at the front. The invention is especially suitable for mounting thin-walled ceramic honeycombs for applications situated close to the motor in exhaust cleaning systems of automobiles. In general, it is also suitable for heat-insulating honeycombs of all types in relation to a housing.

    • Disclosed is a method of manufacturing a catalytic converter for purifying exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine wherein the converter exhibits a monolithic ceramic substrate surrounded by a supporting mat. The method includes the steps of: wrapping the substrate in a sufficient amount of supporting mat material and inserting the wrapped substrate into the metal shell; forming a cylindrical metal shell having an inner surface exhibiting substantially the same curvature as the wrapped substrate; compressively closing the metal shell around the wrapped substrate to an optimized mat density range thereby resulting in the supporting mat exhibiting a substantially uniform and maximum safe compressive stress on the substrate; and, securing together metal shell to provide a gas tight seal and to hold the compressive stress. The optimized mat density range determined by plotting the mat density-mat holding pressure relationship and the mat density-retained cyclic strength ratio relationship of the supporting mat material on a common graph and selecting an optimized range on the mat density-mat holding pressure, and thereafter obtaining the corresponding optimized mat density range.
