    • A compression release engine brake apparatus (70) and method for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust gas recirculator (28, 42, 44) that is connectable between the exhaust outlet (30, 32) and the intake manifold (68) of the engine (22). The exhaust gas recirculator is operative during operation of the engine brake apparatus to recirculate at least a portion of exhaust gases from the exhaust outlet to the intake manifold to increase charging of the cylinders of the engine prior to the compression stroke. Preferably there is an exhaust restrictor (76) downstream of the exhaust outlet. The engine preferably includes a turbocharger (24) downstream of the exhaust outlet. The exhaust restrictor may be a restrictive turbocharger. Preferably there is an exhaust gas cooler (44) connectable between the exhaust outlet and the intake manifold. This process optimizes engine brake performance and is an effective control for exhaust pressure and temperature and for turbocharger speed.

    • In an internal combustion engine (20) braking system which may provide compression release braking and/or exhaust braking, methods and systems are disclosed of controlling the overlap between an exhaust gas recirculation (34) event and an intake valve (32) event to optimize engine braking at various engine operating speeds (900). Optimization may be achieved by selectively advancing and retarding the opening and closing of an exhaust valve (32) for exhaust gas recirculation. Various engine parameters may be monitored (900). Control of exhaust gas recirculation may be responsive thereto, such that a monitored parameter (900) does not exceed a predetermined level.

    • A method and apparatus for carrying out a variable timing exhaust gas recirculation is disclosed for use during both positive power and retarding operation of an internal combustion engine. Motion or energy is derived from an engine component and stored as potential energy. The stored energy (400) is selectively applied to a valve actuator (300) to carry out exhaust gas recirculation in an engine cylinder (40). The energy derived from engine may be stored and selectively applied to the valve actuator (300) with an electronically controlled trigger valve (400). The valve actuator (300) may be a slave piston (300) having an inner core (360) and an outer sleeve (370) capable of opening the exhaust valve (30) of the cylinder (40) in response to independent exhaust gas recirculation and compression release hydraulic systems.

    • An internal combustion engine may include a hydraulic linkage used to transfer motion from a valve train element, such as a cam, to an engine valve (200). Method and apparatus for selectively limiting the motion transferred by the hydraulic linkage (300) from the valve train element to the engine valve are disclosed. The hydraulic linkage may comprise means (350) for resetting or clipping the displacement of the engine valves into the engine cylinder following a compression release event.
