    • A method and coating are provided for temporarily protecting a substrate or article during shipping, handling or storage by applying a removable protective coating over at least a portion of the substrate. The substrate may be flat or curved and may have zero, one or more functional coatings. A plurality of substrates with the protective coating of the invention may be arranged in a shipping container so that the protective coating reduces the possibility of damage to the substrate or optional functional coating. In one embodiment, the protective coating is the evaporation or reaction product of an aqueous coating composition containing a polyvinyl alcohol polymer which may be subsequently removed by aqueous washing, thermal decomposition or combustion. In another embodiment, the protective coating is formed by sputtering a substantially carbon coating onto the substrate. The carbon coating is subsequently removed by combustion. The protective coating may have identification materials, such as colorants or fragrance materials, such that different types of substrates and/or functional coatings can be distinguished from each other. Additionally, the temporary protective coating can improve the heating of a functionally coated glass substrate.

    • Frangible wares, comprising glassware, earthenware including china, and ceramics, the glassware including dishes and vessels such as drinking glasses, are coated with a protective plastic coating, including an initial adhesion-promoting silane, a shock absorbing layer of copolymer, and an outer coating of urethane, such as a high temperature urethane to give protection to the underlying layers in the environment of a commercial dishwasher. The plastic coating may serve as a safety coating, to diminish breakage during both handling and use, and to act as a safeguard and contain the glass particles against scatter in the event of breakage. The copolymer, as an intermediate, softer coating of polyethylene copolymer serves to cohesively retain the particles of frangible parent material, in the event of breakage of the drinking glass. The high temperature urethane outer coating is preferably a thermosetting urethane, capable of withstanding commercial dishwasher temperatures as high as 95 DEG C. With the capability of selectively varying the respective thicknesses of the ethylene copolymer and the urethane coatings, a range of desired characteristics for the vessel composite can be achieved. The urethane may be applied directly to the silane undercoat, and colour may be introduced by blending or by printing.

    • A method of coating optical substrates with anti-reflection (AR) coatings is described. The thickness and composition of the coating is determined by minimizing the product of the Fresnel reflection coefficients for a coating with the angular- and wavelength-dependent sensitivity of the human visual system to minimize the perceived reflectance for the coated article. A compact chamber is evacuated and flushed with chemically inert gas such as argon or nitrogen. One or more molecular precursors are deposited using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) to form AR films. Single-layer AR coatings based on fluoropolymer films of controlled thickness, as well as organic, organosilicon, and/or inorganic multilayers are described. Also provided is a method for monitoring film growth optically, using a polarized, light-emitting diode, a polarizing optical filter, and a photodiode. Feedback from the monitor is used to control the precursor flow to produce single layers and multilayers with prescribed anti-reflection properties.
