    • A telecommunications data interface (24) installs in line between a PC keyboard (20) and a PC (10) and transparently transfers data between the keyboard and the PC. The keyboard has a relatively slow manual data rate at which the keyboard data are synchronously transferred into the PC by a clock line (46). Caller ID data bytes extracted from a telephone line (34, 36) are preceded by a tag byte, impressed on a keyboard data line (44), and synchronously transferred into the PC using the same clock line. Keyboard device driver software installed in the PC separates the keyboard data from the caller ID data and transfers both to appropriate locations for processing and storage. The caller ID interface eliminates the data conflicts and interrupt availability problems that are possible in prior RS-232 based caller ID interfaces. Processors (50, 52) and a memory (62) in the caller ID interface provide self-testing, caller ID data processing, stand alone operation, and inbound and outbound telephone call record storage. Call records include caller ID logging, call origination date and time, and call duration timing.

    • An ergonomic hand-attachable controller for providing command signals to control movement of at least one object responsive to hand movement. The ergonomic hand-attachable controller includes a base with a top surface configured to support a palm of a user's hand. A plurality of planar finger members may be provided which incorporate at least one finger pad which is operable to control movement of a remote object. An attachment member is provided to secure a hand of a user with the top surface of the controller. Electronics within the ergonomic hand-attachable controller convert movement of a user's hand and fingers to command signals for controlling the movement of a remote object.

    • A key palette entry device (Fig. 22B and 22C) consists of two main parts: (1) an armpiece (223), which attaches to the user's arm, and (2) a handpiece (220), which rests in or in close proximity to the hand of the same arm which bears the armpiece (223). Keys, point-and-click device and/or other human interface parts which are mounted on the armpiece (223) are accessed by the opposite hand of the user; the keys on the handpiece (220) are mounted in a manner which allows them to be accessed by the fingers of the hand in or near which the handpiece (220) rests. The key palette can transmit keystroke information via wireless technology. The self-contained design decreases back, shoulder, neck, arm, and wrist stress, strain and discomfort associated with extended use by allowing the user almost unlimited mobility. An alternate embodiment (Fig. 38A) uses piano keys (381) in place of standard keys to provide a MIDI controller. Other alternate embodiments utilize various input/output devices. The device may be attached to the user's arm so that it can revolve, swivel and/or tilt.

    • An apparatus (10) and method is provided for inputting information into an electronic device (90) using the primary and first and second ancillary digits of the operator's hand. The apparatus (10) includes an interface surface (12) having a selector pad (20) divided into a plurality of selector pad switches (22). The selector pad switches (22) are arranged according to a 3 x 3 array for activation by the operator's index finger. Located laterally and below the selector pad (20) are two address switches (33), (35) capable of being selected by the middle finger and thumb of the user's hand. Using the two address switches (33), (35), each selector pad switch (22) may be assigned up to four possible switch addresses. A microprocessor assigns a code element taken from a programmable code table (65) to each switch address. By using the digits to select the various combinations of switches, the operator is able to input information into an electronic device (90) designed to receive such information.

In automatic mode, the contents of the on-board memory buffer (130, 250) are transmitted, by a keystroke emulation technique, to an attached host computer (100) via a conventional keyboard connector cable (40). In the conventional keyboard mode, keystrokes entered are transmitted directly to an attached host computer (100). Also disclosed is a power conservation technique where the device (10) enters a dwell or sleep mode when waiting to process keystrokes.
