    • The invention resides in a method, or device or system configured to operate the method, or entering symbols such as text or characters for display or use on an electronic device in response to a gesture of a user operating the device. The device has an input means configured to detect a gesture. The method including: detecting at the input means a gesture from a set of gestures, wherein the set consists of five (5) gestures; monitoring the sequence of gestures detected by said input means; identifying from a register a symbol [or character] corresponding to a sub-sequence of said gestures; and returning to the electronic device the symbol corresponding to the sub-sequence for the electronic device to display or otherwise use. The input means can have predetermined axes, such as Cartesian axes, and the set of gestures consists of: up; down; left; right; and a tap. The sub-sequence comprises at least a first gesture and a subsequent gesture, or consists of two (2) sequential gestures such as a pair of gestures.
