    • A system for providing a plurality of users access to an information source (4), such as the Internet, including a plurality of computing processors (6) linked to the information source (4) through a server (18) whereby information from the information source is graphically displayed on television receivers (8), each user having access to a television receiver (8) and being assigned one of the computing processors (6) on a shared basis. The server (18) receives and transmits digital data between the information source (4) and the computing processors (6). The users can manipulate and interact with the information through a wireless keyboard (26). A method for providing a plurality of users access to an information source is also disclosed. It is used particularly by hotel guests and hospital patients.

    • Systems and methods provide communication between a user-friendly terminal (2), such as a "home terminal" shaped to resemble a conventional telephone (2), and a number of service provider computers such as financial institutions (20a-20d). The system's application software transforms simple user commands into commands understood by the service provider computers (20a-20d). The network host computer (8) supplies messages to the terminal for generating prompts needed to solicit required information from the user, and communicates with the service computers (20a-20d) according to their respective protocols. The invention provides a packet assembler and disassembler (PAD) element within the home terminal itself, allowing fast response time for the customer at the home terminal while retaining the benefits of data error, entry error correction and data transmission error correction.

    • An electronic device (20) and method for accessing remote electronic facilities (30) and displaying associate information on a conventional television set (50). The electronic device (20) self-configures itself upon power-up or reset by initiating a data call to a configuring facility (30). Information related to available facilities and programming, autonomous mail checking is downloaded to the electronic device (20). The electronic device (20) displays a menu including several user selectable facilities. The user chooses one of the options from the menu by use of a remote keypad control (52). The options available include printing, electronic mail, news and information services. Interfacing the electronic device (20) wit a stylus-type pointing device (54) permits sketching and drawing on the television (50), including superposition of images on captured television images. Captured images of graphics or text are optionally stored or forwarded to a user through a mail facility accessed through operation of the system. The captured images may subsequently be sent via facsimile transmission to other facsimile transmission machines or receivers. The electronic device (20) includes a speaker phone (136) for providing audio information received over telephones to the television (50) speaker.

    • A videotex system employs a subscriber unit (22) at a remote location such as a user's home. The subscriber unit (22) employs the user's telephone tone dial (26) for transmission to a communications module at a central location and uses the user's television set (24) for display of information received as frequency-shift-keying signals by the user's telephone (20). At the central location, the system employs a transmission memory (16) containing the currently desired display, and a microprocessor circuit (28) reads the contents of the transmission memory (16) to send it by FSK signals to the remote location. The information contained in the transmission memory (16) comes from a host computer, and an antiquity memory (50) having locations corresponding to those of transmission memory (16) has its associated location reset whenever a transmission-memory location is written. That antiquity-memory location is then incremented whenever the information is sent, and the microprocessor (28) at the central location repeatedly sends the contents of the transmission-memory location that has been sent least frequently as indicated by the contents in the antiquity-memory (50). The invention reduces the cost of the necessary subscriber units, making the videotex service more widely acceptable. The use of the antiquity-memory and repeated data transmission reduces the effects of data transmission errors due to random noise.
