    • The error concealment method improves the signal quality in transmission systems. The method is used for processing speech signals which have been encoded to speech parameters before transmission via a transmission channel. It allows detection at the receiving end of corrupted signal parameters due to adverse channel conditions. The method comprises estimations of the signal quality and a statistic study of the evolution of the signal parameters so as to derive an indication that the parameter is probably corrupted. A first signal quality estimation is performed. It may be e.g. an estimation of the error probability within the most important bits of the frame. A second signal quality estimation is performed. It may be e.g. an estimation of the error probability within all bits of the frame. Depending on the results of the estimations, the statistic study is performed in order to detect which signal parameters are probably corrupted.

    • A system and method is taught for controlling the power level of transmissions within a communication system having a base station, a mobile station, a communication channel, and a pilot channel. The mobile station determines a signal strength value according to a communication signal received by way of the communication channel. A pilot channel signal is determined according to a pilot signal transmitted by way of the pilot channel. The signal to noise ratio of the communication signal is determined according to the determined signal strength value and the pilot channel signal. The power level of a transmission is controlled according to the signal to noise ratio. The noise level in a communication channel within the communication system is estimated. The pilot channel signal includes pilot energy and pilot noise components. The pilot energy component is removed to provide a remaining pilot signal. Communication system operations are controlled according to the remaining pilot signal. The power levels of transmissions are controlled by determining the signal to noise ratio of a signal within the communication channel and determining a difference signal. The difference signal is formed by determining the difference between determined and desired signal to noise ratios. The difference signal is transmitted between the base station and the mobile station. The pilot channel has at least one frame and the power control signal is inserted into the frame. Thus, information representing the strength of the communication signal is transmitted to the base by way of the pilot channel within the frame. The pilot channel can have two information frames for transmitting the power control signal a plurality of times.

    • The invention relates to a method for estimating a channel bit error ratio in a receiver, and to a receiver. In the method, a pseudo bit error ratio of a channel is determined. The receiver (114) comprises detecting means (202, 204, 206, 208) for detecting a data sequence of a received signal; decoding means (302) for decoding a first encoding of the detected data signal; and re-encoding means (310) for re-encoding with the first encoding the data sequence decoded from the first encoding. The receiver (114) of the invention further comprises quality determining means (304) for providing the detected data sequence with a value for quality, and estimating means (308) for estimating the bit error ratio-provided that the quality of the detected data sequence fulfils a predetermined quality requirement by comparing the detected data sequence with the data sequence re-encoded with first encoding. The first encoding is typically a convolution coding. One way in which quality can be determined is to decode the second encoding which is, for example, a cyclic redundancy check.

    • In an apparatus (200) for determining the rate of received data in a variable rate communication system, a decoder (230) decodes each frame of encoded data in a received signal at each possible data rate. The decoded data is processed by a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) element (240) to produce CRC bits. The data is reencoded and correlated by a correlator (234) with the received encoded data to produce a set of normalized correlation metrics. The decoded data may also be input to a Yamamoto detector (248) to Yamamoto quality metrics. Each operation is performed for each possible data rate. The normalized correlation metric for each rate is calculated from a correlation value and a constant computer for the rate. The correlation value is determined from a correlation of the demodulated soft frame symbols and the re-encoded frame. The highest normalized correlation metric is selected and the CRC bit for this data rate is checked. If the CRC checks, this data rate is indicated as the received data rate. Otherwise, the next highest normalized correlation metric is selected and the process continues. If no CRC checks, an erasure is indicated.
