    • An integrated digital electronic encoder that converts mechanical movement of a device input into a signal that can be applied to particular purposes is described. The encoder and associated signal conditioning and processing circuitry are embedded together as a single unit for simplicity of assembly into particular applications, and reliability. The integrated digital electronic encoder includes a substrate with first and second substantially opposed major surfaces, and a digital encoder formed on the first major surface of the substrate. The encoder comprises an actuation shaft, and the encoder is configured to generate electrical signals in response to movement of the actuation shaft. Electronic circuitry is attached to the second major surface of the substrate, preferably using surface mount technology. The electronic circuitry is electrically connected with the digital encoder to process the signals produced by the encoder. The electronic circuitry includes programmable logic to provide multiple function capability to the integrated digital encoder. The electronic circuitry also includes supervisory power circuitry for conditioning the power supplied to the programmable logic, and output circuitry such as a communication interface.

    • A method and kit for converting a flat panel switch to a raised panel switch by mounting a rotary switch thereto. The flat panel switch has a carrier layer (10). A set of electrodes forming an electrical circuit is disposed on carrier (10). The kit includes a rotor (20) having a head mounted in a front cover (16). A stem (40) attached to the head extends through front cover (16) for actuation by a user. An electrical contact member is connected to the head for movement therewith. The contact member is associated with the electrodes to alter the condition of the electrical circuit upon actuation of the rotor (20). The front cover (16) has latches (17) that extend through perforations in the carrier for engagement with a back cover (18). The latches lock the front and back covers in place on the carrier (10).

    • A switching element, specifically an encoder element, is fabricated by forming a conductive track on an insulative substrate, and then screen printing an insulative layer on the track in a predetermined pattern that forms a contact array that comprises a plurality of conductive contacts separated by nonconductive areas. In a preferred embodiment, the substrate is a polymeric resin, and the track comprises (a) a copper base layer formed on a surface of the substrate in the configuration of the track, (b) a first metal-plated layer, preferably of nickel, on the base layer, and (c) a second metal-plated layer, preferably of gold, on the first metal-plated layer. The insulative layer is preferably formed of a thick film dielectric material comprising a difunctional monomer (e.g., diallyl isophthalate), a glyclol ether ester (e.g., ethylene glycol monobutyl ether acetate), an inorganic filler (e.g., BaSO4), and an acetate surface modifier (e.g., an ethyl acrylate/ethylhexylacrylate copolymer). The screen-printed dielectric material on the conductive track results in an array of contacts separated by nonconductive areas that extend no more than about 30 microns above the surface of the contacts. A preferred embodiment of an encoder element so fabricated includes first and second concentric annular contact arrays formed as encoder elements that concentrically surround a central collector contact.

    • A manually controllable switch provides a user with an "analog feeling" for controlling digital electronics. A plurality of first electrical conducting portions are alternately arranged with a plurality of second electrical conducting portions. Physical spacing between electrical conducting portions is proportionally and symmetrically varied to provide a sequence of logical states upon movement of the manually adjustable control knob. An electrical contact on the control knob moves into and out of engagement with the electrical conducting portions. Contact between the contacting portion and the conducting portions causes changes in logic state as recognized by a microprocessor or dedicated circuitry coupled to the conducting portions. The microprocessor or dedicated circuitry recognizes specific sequences of change in logic state as indicating manual movement of the control knob.
