    • A multi-layer cathode block (30) for an electrolytic cell (10) has at least a surface layer (32) with a surface expansion index and a second layer (34) with a second expansion index. The surface layer (32) includes a surface wetting agent in a first total amount. The second layer (34) includes a wetting agent in a second total amount. The surface layer (32) is directly superposed to the second layer (34). The second wetting agent in the second layer (34) includes metal boride precursors that react together to generate a metal boride component in situ when the cathode block (30) is exposed to start-up and operation conditions of the electrolytic cell (10). The second total amount is lower than the first total amount and is selected so as to minimize the difference between the expansion indexes of the surface layer (32) and the second layer (34).

    • A high capacity anode preparation apparatus is provided which allows for the processing of raw anodes at production rates of up to, or exceeding, 600 anodes per hour. The processed anodes are suitable for use in the electrorefining of various metal materials, but in particular, in the electrorefining of copper. The apparatus is preferably part of a system which utilizes high speed industrial robots to supply, and remove, anodes to or from the apparatus, and provides the anodes in a horizontal orientation. The apparatus is equipped with a variety of treatment stations which are adapted to treat the raw anode while it is held in a horizontal orientation. The horizontal orientation allows the center of gravity for the apparatus to be kept close to the center of gravity for the apparatus, and thus allows the apparatus to rotate more rapidly than prior art device. Faster processing of the raw anodes is provided.

    • A low cost, low volume, electrical discharge texturing machine which can texture rolling mill rolls having a broad range of diameters and lengths either on a production or research and development basis. The machine is relatively portable, for example, it can be mounted on a skid or a palate, and can be used at any location having an adequate electrical supply. Electrodes are mounted on the machine in a manner which maximizes flexibility in respect of the roll diameters that can be textured. The machine also has adjustable supports for the rolls and a dielectric oil tank to provide additional flexibility in the roll dimensions that can be textured. Furthermore, the machine has programmable x-axis drives and these can optionally be used in combination with programmable roll drives.
