    • A method and apparatus for restoring curvature to the human spine (17). The apparatus includes a table (12) for supporting a body in a supine position. Mounted to the table are resilient lumbar (16) and cervical (14) supports. The supports are each shaped to correspond substantially to their named posterior concavity of the spine for applying a static force to the concavity. A force actuator (65) having a piston is spaced above the table to apply a fore anteriorly to the spine through the body, the piston extended against and withdrawn from the body as the body resists the force through muscular action. The force actuator is longitudinally movable (68) relative to the body in response to muscular action of the body.

    • A weight control device (10) and method for disrupting natural mastication and transport of food at chewing surfaces of the teeth (12), to thereby impede the rate of food consumption and provide an appliance useful for weight reduction. The device comprises an outwardly projecting wing-guard or flange (14, 15, 40), which is attached by a support collar (11) to the posterior teeth along a distal to mesial orientation. The flange (14, 15, 40) is positioned laterally of the teeth and above the chewing surfaces, with the upper portion inclined away from the teeth and the relative movement of the teeth during occlusion. The corresponding inventive methods comprise the steps of (i) interposing a blocking member (14, 15) between the food manipulating muscles such as the tongue, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth; and/or (ii) intermittently interposing a blocking member (40) between the chewing surfaces of the individual's teeth in response to food within the mouth to intermittently preclude occlusion of the teeth for mastication.

The support structure (130) which supports the limbs of the patient, can be adjusted with respect to the chassis (106) so that degree of limb flexure can be varied in accordance with individual/current needs.

    • An improved immobilization device (10) for specific patients and body parts is provided which insures that a body part is immobilized and can be successively repositioned in the same location during successive treatments. The device (10) is thus particularly applicable for treatment such as radiation therapy where it is important to properly focus treating radiation on a particular locale from treatment-to-treatment. The device (10) preferably includes a frame assembly (16) adapted to rest upon a surface and which supports a preformed, shape-retaining material (12) presenting a concavity (14) substantially conforming with a selected body part to be immobilized. The device (10) when used for head immobilization, may also be provided with a stabilizer (98) in the form of an adjustably positioned bite block (134). Hold-down straps (52, 54) can also be employed for further immobilization. Additional immobilization may also be provided by a nose bridge hold-down assembly (136) operably coupled to frame assembly (16) and engaging nose bridge and eyebrow region of the patient.
