    • One or more broadcast servers (802) transmit information (advertisement content and multimedia data content) to one or more digital audio broadcast (iDAB) receivers (804) over a network such as an in-band on-channel (iBOC) network. A client with an iDAB receiver is able to purchase multimedia content (812) by a simple action through a man-machine interface (MMI) (806). Furthermore, a mechanism is described for setting thresholds, wherein the thresholds define when actual broadcasting of the content should begin. The thresholding mechanism is implemented either in iDAB receiver or in a Push-Pull gateway broadcasting the multimedia content. Bulk purchases are described, where such purchases are done via: direct order placement, indirect order placement, or via a B-server (over iBOC) download to receivers. Additionally, bulk purchase allows for the spreading of uplink traffic from consumer devices (808).

    • An FM broadcast transmitter (Fig. 5) transmits a broadcast signal having a carrier at a broadcast frequency and sidebands, able to be transmitted at full power, within a transmission bandwidth around the carrier. It includes a source of a modulated FM stereo signal having a carrier at the broadcast frequency and having sidebands with a bandwidth less than the trnasmission bandwidth representing a stereo signal. It also includes a source of a modulated IBOC signal, having carrier pulses spaced relative to each other to represent the IBOC digital data signal encoded as a variable pulse width encoded signal, and a bandwidth within the transmission bandwidth not overlapping the FM stereo signal sidebands. A signal combiner combines the modulated FM stereo signal and the modulated IBOC signal to form the broadcast signal. An FM broadcast receiver (Fig. 6) receives a broadcast signal including a first modulated signal representing an FM stereo signal, and a second modulated signal, having carrier pulses spaced relative to each other to represent an in-band-on-channel (IBOC) digital data signal encoded as a variable pulse width encoded signal. It includes a signal separator for generating a first separated signal representing the FM stereo signal and a second separated signal representing the IBOC digital data signal. An FM signal processor generates a stereo audio signal represented by the FM stereo signal. An IBOC signal processor generates a digital data signal represented by the IBOC digital data signal.

    • A method and an apparatus are used to place virtual objects in video programs. Programs are selected and virtual object locations are defined in the selected programs. The available virtual objects available are categorized and the categories are correlated to subscriber information. When a frame of a program includes a virtual object location, a default or an alternate virtual object is displayed. The virtual object location may change over space or time. The virtual object may be interactive, and may be used to link a subscriber to a remote location, such as an Internet web site. An operations center or a cable headend may generate a group assignment plan that assigns the subscriber's terminals to groups, based on factors such as area of dominant influence and household income. A placement plan may instruct the television terminals to display the desired virtual object. The television terminals may record which virtual objects were displayed, and may report this information to the cable headends and the operations center. The reported information is used to generate billing for commercial advertisers, and to analyze viewer watching habits. The invention uses upstream data reception hardware, databases and processing hardware and software, and corresponding features in the televisions to accomplish these functions.

    • A broadcasting method for simultaneously broadcasting analog and digital signals in a standard AM broadcasting channel is provided by: broadcasting an amplitude modulated radio frequency signal having a first frequency spectrum, wherein the amplitude modulated radio frequency signal includes a first carrier at a frequency of fo modulated by an analog program signal representative of program material; and simultaneously broadcasting a plurality of digitally modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexed carrier signals within a frequency range of about fo +/- 15 kHz, which encompasses the first frequency spectrum, each of the digitally modulated carrier signals being modulated by a portion of a digital program signal, wherein the digital signal includes a digital representation of the program material, additional data, or a combination of the program material and the additional data. A first group of the digitally modulated carrier signals lying within the first frequency spectrum are modulated in-quadrature with the first carrier signal, and second and third groups of the digitally modulated carrier signals lie outside of the first frequency spectrum and are modulated both in-phase and in-quadrature with the first carrier signal. A training sequence of known data is periodically transmitted using selected ones of the digitally modulated carrier signals. Transmitters and receivers which operate in accordance with the above method are also provided.

    • A method for AM in-band-on-channel (IBOC) digital audio broadcasting (DAB) uses a center channel signal in a central frequency band (18) of an AM radio channel, the center channel signal is modulated by first and second versions of the program material to be transmitted. In a hybrid IBOC DAB version, the center channel signal includes a carrier which is analog modulated by the first version of the program material and additional sub-carriers modulated by the second version of the program material, wherein the additional sub-carriers are transmitted at a power spectral density level that is less than the power spectral density of the analog modulated carrier. In an all-digital version, the center channel signal includes two groups of sub-carriers modulated with the program material.
