    • In general, a constellation of spacecraft is used to broadcast to a particular region with high angles of view in order to reduce blockage or shadowing. A constellation of a plurality of spacecraft is placed in 24-hour orbits having inclination of about 55°, eccentricity of about 0.32, semi-major axis of about 42,000 km, longitude of the ascending node of about 43° East, argument of perigee of about 270°, and longitude of the ground track at maximum latitude of about 7° East. The preferred number of spacecraft ranges from three to six. In a particular application of Digital Audio Broadcast to Europe in some embodiments, the most populous cities are provided with service from no more than about 10° from vertical, and broadcast takes place when the spacecraft are above at least 35° North latitude. The broadcast power is reduced during those portions of the orbit in which the ground track lies in the Southern hemisphere.

    • Interference effects between television transmitters for amplitude modulated or digital video and operating on a common allocated channel or frequency is avoided while discrimination is improved by synchronizing carrier signals for a plurality of transmitters. Booster transmitters (20, 20') for correcting coverage anomalies can operate on the same channel or frequency rather than requiring a different channel or frequency presently required in translators; making all allocable channels available for diverse broadcast programming. Discrimination between transmitters operating on the same channel or frequency but with potentially differing programming can be achieved with directional antennas (22, 24). Synchronization of carrier signals is achieved by frequency multiplication of a tone relayed over a satellite (18) or microwave transmission (34) channel by an integral power of two using one or more serially connected full-wave rectifier stages (80, 82, 84) and tuned filters (88).

    • An access material for information communication including a transmitter for establishing a radio frequency link allowing the access terminal to initiate information communication via at least one of a multiplicity of communication channels of a time division multiple access (TDMA) satellite communication system. A data communication channel associated with one of the multiplicity of communication channels is provided for transmitting signaling information over the satellite communication system as a first communication channel. A second communication channel, a voice communication channel, is also associated with the communication channel, thus providing, respectively, first and second modes of communication for voice and signaling information transactions. A memory stores a protocol processing information including a signal protocol assigned to the access terminal via the satellite communication system for transmission by the transmitter using the data communication signaling channel for signaling over the radio frequencycommunication link. Robust signaling may be provided with enhanced information modulation such as binary phase shift keying or dual tone multifrequency digits for keying, enhanced noise and power margins for signaling, or a paging antenna provided with the access terminal of the like for a more robust signaling link.
