    • An apparatus for providing exercise to recreational users and training to professional users comprising a support frame on which a bicycle frame is mounted and a resistance generation unit coupled to the support frame to provide resistance against the pedalingof the user. The resistance unit comprises a magnetic field generation source and a flywheel having an annular ring constructed from a plurality of segments of a non-magnetic, conductive material. The resistance exercise apparatus and trainer utilizes the flywheel to eliminate the need for the conventional rear wheel of a bicycle. The use of the flywheel as part of the resistance generation unit creates a "single-stage" resistance exercise trainer, because the resistance generated on the flywheel is transmitted to the user through a direct chain drive of a conventional bicycle. According to another aspect of the present invention, the resistance exercise apparatus includes a chain tensioning mechanism. The chain tensioning mechanism provides a method of tightening or loosenig the tension of the chain to improve the overall efficiencyof the chain drive mechanism and prevent the chain from "jumping"off the chain ring during operation.

    • A variable resistance device (100) is adapted to be incorporated in an exercise machine to provide variable resistance. The device has a primary fluid chamber (1). A rotating mechanism (2) rotates within the primary chamber (1). The rotation mechanism (2) upon rotation encounters a degree of resistance dependent on the amount of fluid in the primary chamber (1). A secondary chamber (3) is positioned within or proximate the primary chamber (1). The secondary chamber (3) achieves and maintains an appropriate amount of the fluid in the primary chamber (1) to provide a selected degree of resistance for the exercise machine. Fluid flows through the primary chamber (1) into the secondary chamber (3) and then back into the primary chamber (1). Variable control of the flow of fluid serves to establish and maintain the appropriate amount of fluid in the primary chamber required for a certain degree of resistance; and can provide differing degrees of resistance for the exercise machine.

    • A system, apparatus and method for interactively controlling the rate of real-time video playback and audio track playback is disclosed. A preferred embodiment of the apparatus is an interactive exercise video system which utilizes a bicycle, a bicycle wheel speed detector, an interface unit connected to the wheel speed detector and to a conventional game controller connected to a conventional video game CD player, which is in turn connected to a TV. A prerecorded video CD is played in the player in which the display rate of video images is altered via software embedded on the CD such that the speed of the video is changed by the level of activity on the exercise device. The variation of the video frame rate is accomplished by modifying the duration time stamp on each video frame which is used by the player control program so as to change the sequential time at which each frame is called for display by the conventional video player. The variation of video display rate is independent of the pitch of the audio play rate. To maintain synchronization of the audio with the video without changing the pitch of the audio, portions of the audio are looped back, i.e. replayed.

    • In a bicycle-type exercising apparatus, a roller (72) is driven by the rear wheel (16) of the bicycle. The roller is connected to a load device which varies the load resistance experienced by the person exercising on the exercise apparatus. The load device comprises a differential band brake (86) having a pivoted member (92) with the opposite ends connected to opposing ends of a brake band (90). A spring (94) is inserted between one end of the pivoted member and the corresponding end of the brake band. A self-correcting servomotor (96) is connected to the pivoted member to control the braking force. A computer (98) may be programed to control the motion of the servomotor, and thus control the forces exerted by the load device.

    • A bicycle simulator ( 1 ) is basically constituted by a bicycle pre-arranged for static or pseudo-static use. The bicycle comprises front and rear supports (13, 14) for resting on the floor ( 12) that simulate the contact of the wheels of a normal bicycle on the road. The two supports are preferably constituted by a front supporting wheel (1 3) and by a rear supporting wheel ( 14) that rest on the floor and support in a freely rotatable way the respective wheel axles (3, 1 1). Rotatably mounted within at least the front supporting wheel is a flywheel (Fl, F2). The front flywheel (F l ) is set in rotation by a respective electric motor (M) or by a transmission driven by the pedals, for creating a stabilizing gyroscopic effect, which enables the user to maintain his balance when pedalling with the bicycle stationary, resting on the floor via the supporting wheels in a static condition.
