摘要： A system, method and apparatus for performing a renal replacement therapy is provided. In one embodiment, two small high flux dialyzers (20, 30) are connected in series. A restriction (40) is placed between the two dialyzers in the dialysate flow path (962). The restriction is variable and adjustable in one preferred embodiment. The restriction builds a positive pressure in the venous dialyzer, causing a high degree of intentional backfiltration. That backfiltration causes a significant flow of dialysate through the high flux venous membrane directly into the patient's blood. That backfiltered solution is subsequently ultrafiltered from the patient from the arterial dialyzer. The diffusion of dialysate into the venous filter and removal of dialysate from the arterial dialyzer causes a convective transport of toxins from the patient. Additionally, the dialysate that does not diffuse directly into the patient but instead flows across the membranes of both dialyzers provides a diffusive clearance of waste products.

The filter of this invention uses a plastic film bag free from leakage of the fluid as a housing and is produced by fusing a heat-fusible film such as polyethylene to a filter film used generally such as a polysulfone film by heat-sealing, forming a closed bag-like space on one or both sides of the filter film and disposing an inlet and an outlet. The filter of this invention is most suitable for a precision low-pressure application such as a medical final filtering or blood transfusion, and its usable pressure can be further levated by use of a reinforcing box, or the like.

摘要： In a remote control system and method for use in intraluminally or intravascularly located operations, an invasive element to which a remote control unit (RCU) is attached is introducible into a lumen. An elongated tube, to which an activation device is affixed near a distal end, is feedable into the lumen via the invasive element. The RCU is positionable within transmission range of an actuator for the activation device. An operator manipulating the tube with one hand to receive a tactile sensation and engaging the RCU with another hand simultaneously views the tube distal end on a monitor, and depresses an RCU button to actuate the activation device after determining that a body portion is in need of a corrective action. In one embodiment, the RCU comprises a shell for securing the invasive element, facilitating application of a reactive force to the shell by a finger during an operation.

摘要： An optical blood monitoring system and corresponding method avoid the need to obtain a precise intensity value of the light impinging upon the measured blood layer during the analysis. The system is operated to determine at least two optical measurements through blood layers of different thickness but otherwise substantially identical systems. Due to the equivalence of the systems, the two measurements can be compared so that the bulk extinction coefficient of the blood can be calculated based only on the known blood layer thicknesses and the two measurements. Reliable measurements of various blood parameters can thereby be determined without certain calibration steps.
