    • A drift warning unit for a buoy or vessel (1) positioned remotely from a central monitoring unit (2) comprises a global positioning system (GPS) receiver (or receiver acting as a relay) (3), positioned on the buoy (1), which receives global positioning information from earth satellites. A presetter (4) enables the desired latitude and longitude co-ordinates of the buoy (1) to be set. The central unit (2) includes a receiver/transmitter (6) for receiving and transmitting data over a data link (5). A processor (7) is programmed to store the positional data relating to the buoy (1) when it is set in its initial position and it activates an interrogator (8) at regular intervals. The interrogator (8) causes an interrogation signal to be sent over the data link (5) to the buoy (1), which is then input to a transponder (9) which activates a transmitter (10) to transmit GPS positional data relating to the buoy (1) back to the central unit (2). The GPS data is received by the receiver (6) and input to the processor (7), which then compares the present position of the buoy (1) with the stored initial position and if the present position is outside a preprogrammed error range the processor displays a warning signal on a display (11). The system uses GPS in what is called the Differential Mode.

    • An output having reduced additive phase-noise in at least one defined frequency band is obtained from a voltage-controlled oscillator (5) by applying a frequency-modulating signal omega mt to the oscillator to produce a sideband within the defined band, the signal having a frequency much higher than the highest multiplicative phase-noise frequency (referred to the unmodulated oscillator frequency) in that band and producing a modulation index DELTA P much greater than the modulation index DELTA Pn of the total phase-noise (i.e. additive plus multiplicative) in that band. The oscillator output is then phase-modulated with a signal at omega mt selected from the output of a phase-shift frequency-discriminator (9) having an appropriate delay (d) which receives the oscillator (5) output either after the phase-modulation thereof by modulator (8), or before the phase-modulation thereof by modulator (20), or both, in a sense and at an amplitude which tends to cancel the additive phase-noise modulation in the oscillator output. In a preferred form the discriminator (9) receives the oscillator (5) output before its phase-modulation by modulator (20), and a frequency-modulating pilot-tone ( omega m + omega q)t of modulation index DELTA Pq is also applied to the oscillator, where DELTA P> DELTA Pq>Pn. A feedback loop (29-34) detects variations in the phase and amplitude of the pilot-tone content of the final output and, via multiplier (27), controls the modulating input to modulator (20) in a sense to minimise the pilot-tone content and hence also the additive phase-noise.

    • A synthetic aperture radar system (10) includes a distortion correction device (60) arranged for autofocussing of raw data by contrast maximisation. Low resolution processing in a first correlator (78a) identifies sixteen high contrast range gates. These are reprocessed at high resolution in a second correlator (78b) with reference functions selected on the basis of a range of trial accelerations. The acceleration producing highest contrast averaged over the sixteen range gates is taken as the current radar platform across-track acceleration. A microprocessor (80e) computes across-track position and velocity changes on the basis of across-track acceleration history. These are employed to generate phase and range corrections for the raw data, which convert it to that which would have been obtained if the radar platform had maintained its initial track accurately. A processing device (100) processes the corrected data with reference functions selected on the basis of corrected range. Processed image data is then stored or displayed as a function of corrected range. In one embodiment, the invention provides distortion correction accurate to a few metres, as opposed to typical errors of up to hundreds of metres in conventional SAR processing. Image change detection may also be implemented.

    • A relatively fast method of curing elastomer-modified epoxy resin formulations is provided which produces highly toughened epoxy polymers. The method consists of providing a mixture of 100 parts by weight of an epoxy resin, from 12.5 to 25 parts by weight a carboxyl-terminated polybutadiene/acrylonitrile (CTBN) liquid elastomer, and from 2 to 10 parts by weight of an aliphatic heterocyclic amine curing agent, and curing the mixture at a temperature of 135 DEG C to 190 DEG C for 2 to 10 hours. The amine is preferably piperidine. In comparison with an identical resin formulation cured under conventional curing conditions (120 DEG C for 16 hours), the product of the present method exhibits an up to seven-fold improvement in toughness (as measured by fracture energy GIC) with little or no reduction in glass transition temperature or modulus of elasticity.
