摘要： A strip loaded waveguide (200) comprises a slab (205) and a strip (210), wherein the strip is separated from the slab. Nevertheless, a guiding region (225) is provided for propagating an optical mode and this guiding region extends both within the strip and the slab. A layer of material (215) having an index of refraction lower than that of the strip and the slab may be disposed between and separate the strip and the slab. In one embodiment, the slab comprises a crystalline silicon, the strip comprises polysilicon or crystalline silicon, and the layer of material therebetween comprises silicon dioxide. Such waveguides may be formed on the same substrate with transistors. These waveguides may also be electrically biased to alter the index of refraction and/or absorption of the waveguide.

The tunable filter, operating as a directional coupler, has three waveguides including a central, feedguide (32) and a pair of branch waveguides (34, 36). Through either electro-optic effects or free carrier injection, the TM and TE polarization modes of the central wavelength can be coupled from the feedguide (32) to the appropriate branch guide. The separated modes can be either detected independently (40, 42) or reunited in phase for further processing.

摘要： Embodiments of an optical device, an array of optical devices, and a technique for fabricating the optical device or the array are described. This optical device is implemented on a substrate (such as silicon), and includes a thermally tunable optical waveguide that has good thermal isolation from its surroundings. In particular, a portion of a semiconductor in the optical device, which includes the optical waveguide, is free standing above a gap between the semiconductor layer and the substrate. By reducing the thermal coupling between the optical waveguide and the external environment, the optical device can be thermally tuned with significantly less power consumption.
