    • A neural stimulator (400) includes an electrically non-conductive carrier (402) and at least two electrically conductive electrodes (404, 406) disposed on opposite sides of the carrier (402). The electrodes (404, 406) on the opposite sides of the carrier are not electrically connected together. Instead, a signal source is connected to one of the electrodes (404) on one side of the carrier (402) and a return path to the signal source is connected to a corresponding electrode (406) on the other side of the carrier (402). The corresponding electrode (406) can, but need not be, directly opposite the electrode (404) on the other side of the carrier (402). The electrodes (404, 406) can be rings, disks, other shapes or combinations thereof. Optionally, the carrier includes low-impedance shunts (500, 502, 1102, 1104) therethrough.

    • An implantable electrode is described for a cochlear implant patient with a malformed common cavity cochlea having a single internal cavity defined by an outer cavity wall or patients having an incomplete partition or conventional spiral-shaped cochlea. An intra-cochlear electrode array is configured to be inserted into the cochlea through a single cochleostomy opening. Outer array branches are closable about a center axis and the electrode array is configured to be closed into a single tube including the array branches for insertion through the single cochleostomy opening into the internal chamber of the cochlea. The electrode array opens within the internal cavity after insertion into the cochlea so that the array branches move away from the center axis to lie with their outer surfaces against the outer cavity wall to deliver the electrical stimulation signals through the stimulation contacts to adjacent neural tissue for auditory perception by the patient.

    • An implantable drug delivery accessory is described. A middle ear guide member has a hollow interior enclosed by a non-permeable outer surface. A proximal end of the middle ear guide member is fixed to the tympanic membrane of an implanted patient. A distal end of the middle ear guide member penetrates through a fluid-tight sealed opening into the inner ear. An inner ear holding member has a proximal end connected to the distal end of the middle ear guide member at the sealed opening and a closed distal end terminating the inner ear holding member some predetermined distance within the cochlea. A hollow interior of the inner ear holding member contains a replaceable drug delivery member which stores a therapeutic drug. A semi-permeable outer surface of the inner ear holding member is connected to a cochlear implant electrode and adapted to release therapeutic drug from the hollow interior into adjacent tissue. The drug delivery member is removable and replaceable via the ear canal of the implanted patient through the proximal end of the middle ear.

    • An implantable medical device includes an implantable coil case that contains a communications coil. A magnet receptacle is located within the coil case at the radial center and has a magnet opening in one of the lateral surface or the medial surface of the coil case. A magnet fitting groove is recessed into one of the lateral or medial surface of the coil case and extends from the magnet opening to the outer circumference of the coil case. A u-shaped implant magnet clip has parallel clip legs that are connected at a closed end of the u-shape, and an implant magnet is attached to one of the clip legs. The coil case and the magnet clip are configured to cooperate for a portion of the coil case to fit between the clip legs and the implant magnet to slide through the magnet fitting groove and fit through the magnet opening into the magnet receptacle.
