    • An elevator machine assembly includes a motor (22), a brake (26) and a traction sheave. A coupling (40) couples one of the motor to the traction sheave such that the traction sheave rotates responsive to movement of the motor or couples the brake to the traction sheave such that the brake selectively limits movement of the traction sheave. The coupling provides an output that is indicative of torque at the traction sheave. In a disclosed example, the coupling comprises a magnetoelastic material that provides a magnetic field that is indicative of torque at the traction sheave. An exemplary method of operating a motor for selectively moving an elevator traction sheave includes determining a torque at the traction sheave. A command signal for controlling the motor is generated based upon the determined torque.

    • A brake (110, 110a, 110b) for applying torque upon a rotatable component (120) is provided. The brake (110, 110a, 110b) may comprise a first flange (112, 112a, 112b) and a second flange (114, 114a, 114b), each of the first and second flanges (112, 112a, 112b, 114, 114a, 114b) having respective first and second sets of poles (122, 122a, 122b, 124, 124a, 124b) extending therefrom. The second flange (114, 114a, 114b) may be coupled to the rotatable component (120) and disposed proximate to the first flange (112, 112a, 112b) such that the second set of poles (124, 124a, 124b) is disposed in close proximity to the first set of poles (122, 122a, 122b). The brake (110, HOa, 110b) may also comprise a ring assembly (125, 125a, 125b) that is disposed between the first and second flanges (112, 112a, 112b, 114, 114a, 114b). The ring assembly (125, 125a, 125b) may include a permanent magnet ring (126, 126a, 126b), one or more magnetic cores (128, 128a, 128b) and a brake coil (130, 130a, 130b).

    • A braking device (140) for an elevator (20) is disclosed. The device (140) may include a motor (36), a braking system (52), a first switch (148), and a second switch (150). The motor (36) may be capable of generating a counter-electromotive force. The braking system (52) may move to a disengaged position upon being energized and may move to an engaged position upon being de-energized. The first and second switches (148, 150) may have an open state. In the open state, the switches (148, 150) electrically couple the motor (36) to the braking system (52) so that the counter-electromotive force of the motor (36) may energize the braking system (52).
