摘要： The water purification cartridge treats water with a halogen liberated from halogenated hydantoinyl resins and polymers, resulting in the safe, complete, and economical purification of non-potable water at low flow rates typically found in gravity feed filtration systems and in systems with low water pressures of less than about 1 psig. The cartridge of the invention purifies non-potable water of bacteria, viruses, and some protozoans without the need for additional power sources or risk to the consumer for exposure to chemicals that have been identified to have harmful, long-term effects. The cartridge described herein enables a gravity fed water purification system by combining the cartridge with conventional filters, such as porous diatomaceous earthen ceramic water filters or activated carbon filters packed either with granular activated carbon or block.

摘要： A gravity-fed water treatment system is described that purifies water by inactivating bacteria, protozoa, and viruses. In this system, water is first filtered to remove bacteria and protozoa. This can be accomplished by multiple means, such as ceramic filters containing activated carbon. The filtered water then flows into a purification cartridge housing a purification media, such as the compounds or polymers containing N-halamine described by Worley et al. and Bridges et al. This same purification cartridge also houses an adsorptive media that reduces any residual halogen concentrations in the treated water. The contact quality in the purification media chamber is such that the viral particles are saturated with halogens, becoming irreversibly inactivated.

Also disclosed are methods of harvesting algae from an aqueous environment by growing the algae in aggregated clumps and/or mats (formed by the inclusion of soluble or insoluble chitosan and/or chitin or other polycationic or cationic substances) that can be easily removed from the aqueous environment either by filtration, surface skimming, and/or growing in a porous containment device, such as a natural or synthetic fabric, and removing the fabric from the aqueous environment containing the aggregated algae. The methods disclosed have direct applications in biofuel and energy production, agricultural feedstock production, nutrient production, greenhouse gas reduction, removal of microconstituents from water, and water reclamation.

摘要： A water purifier that can be placed between an upper canister and a lower canister. The upper canister may include filters. Unfiltered water placed in the upper canister drains by gravity through the filters and water purifier into the lower canister. The water purifier includes a dispenser, a purifying media, and an indicator. Filtered, but unpurified, water passes from the upper canister into the water purifier, which houses the dispenser in which a material containing a chlorine and/or bromine compound is located. As water contacts the material, halogen is eluted to the filtered water. The purifying media contacts the unpurified water with halogen. The purifying media binds with the halogen, thereby maintaining the activity of the purifying media to purify the unpurified water. The water purifier may include an indicator to indicate when the material needs replacing.

摘要： Siloxane monomers and polymers functionalized by certain N-halogenated heterocyclic moieties are provided for the purpose of functionalizing surfaces or materials so as to render them biocidal upon exposure to oxidative halogen solutions. The biocidal function can be imparted either before or after bonding or adhesion to the surface or material. The biocidal surfaces and materials can then be used to inactivate pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and yeasts, as well as virus particles, which can cause infectious diseases, and those microorganisms which cause noxious odors and unpleasant coloring such as mildew. Examples of surfaces and materials which can be rendered biocidal in this invention include, but are not limited to, cellulose, chitin, chitosan, synthetic fibers, glass, ceramics, plastics, rubber, cement grout, latex caulk, porcelain, acrylic films, vinyl, polyurethanes, silicon tubing, marble, metals, metal oxides, and silica.

One embodiment of compounds have the formula (a) wherein R 1 and R 2 are at least one of an alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbons or phenyl group; R 3 is at least one of the hydrogen and an alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbons; and X is at least one of a hydrogen and a halogen. The compounds are rendered biocidal when X is a halogen. The compounds are useful for making protective films, coatings, sealants, adhesives, sponges, foams, paints and in other applications.
