    • Various technologies presented herein relate to enhancing mixing inside a combustion chamber to form one or more locally premixed mixtures comprising fuel and charge-gas to enable minimal, or no, generation of soot and/or other undesired emissions during ignition and subsequent combustion of the locally premixed mixtures. To enable sufficient mixing of the fuel and charge-gas, a jet of fuel can be directed to pass through a bore of a duct causing charge-gas to be drawn into the bore creating turbulence to mix the fuel and the drawn charge-gas. The duct can be located proximate to an opening in a tip of a fuel injector. An ignition assist component can be located downstream of the duct to facilitate ignition of the fuel/charge-gas mixture.

    • Premixed engines have ignition issues when engine speed and load are below a predetermined range. An ignition apparatus for igniting a premixed charge in a gaseous-fuelled internal combustion engine comprises an ignition device associated with a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine. There is at least one of a dilutant injector for introducing a diluting agent that forms a stratified charge around the ignition device and an enrichment injector for introducing gaseous fuel that forms a stratified charge around the ignition device. An electronic controller is operatively connected with the ignition device and the at least one of the dilutant injector and the enrichment injector and programed to at least one of actuate the dilutant injector to introduce the diluting agent when the ignition device decreases a local air-fuel equivalence ratio around the ignition device below a predetermined threshold; and actuate the enrichment injector to introduce the gaseous fuel to decrease the local air- fuel equivalence ratio when engine load and engine speed are below a predetermined threshold engine load and speed range and when the ignition device does not affect the local air-fuel equivalence around the ignition device.

    • An ignition chamber (40) for use in either direct or indirect injection compression auto-ignition internal combustion engines which enables such engines to operate using substantially pure commercial grade alcohol and other low cetane fuels at low compressions and which includes a housing (43) which is predominantly in convective heat exchange relationship with the combustion zone and which has a plurality of openings (46) therein which are designed and oriented with respect to the surface (47, 48) thereof so as to create an air flow therein during compression which air flow will cause the lighter components of a partial fuel charge directed into the ignition chamber to be collected and concentrated adjacent a central zone (50) where such lighter and generally more volatile components of the fuel charge will be subjected to the elevated residual temperatures therein to thereby initiate a controlled ignition of the remaining fuel injected into the combustion chamber of the engine. In an alternate embodiment, the ignition chambers (80) may be mounted directly to the walls (73) of the combustion cavity (72) formed in the upper portion of the piston (65). The ignition chamber (80) includes a housing (82) having spaced rows of openings (86) therein.
