    • The present invention relates to an air conditioning system (10) for an aircraft cabin (12) with at least one air inlet (14) for supplying air to the cabin (12), at least one air outlet (16) for discharging air from the cabin (12) and at least one compressed-air source (52, 54, 56), which is adapted to provide pressurised fresh air for supplying to the cabin (12) via the at least one air inlet (14). The air conditioning system (10) further comprises a heat exchanger (42) supplied with ram air from a ram air inlet (92) for cooling air from the compressed-air source (52, 54, 56), wherein the heat exchanger (42) is disposed upstream of the air inlet (14) of the cabin (12). It is intended that the air conditioning system (10) comprises a cabin air heat exchanger (100) which is designed to be supplied with air discharged from the cabin (12), wherein the cabin air heat exchanger (100) is disposed downstream of the at least one air outlet (16) and upstream of a point (N) at which fresh air is mixed with air from the cabin (12).

    • An air cycle environmental control system regenerates energy through the provision of a reheater condenser (19) that condenses water vapor from compressed air. The condensed water vapor is extracted by a water extractor (21) to produce dehumidified air. A subcooler heat exchanger (23) can receive the dehumidified air (20) for further cooling, but while causing a minimal amount of condensation. A subcooled air (24) from the subcooler heat exchanger (23) is then reheated in the reheater condenser (19), with a resulting reheated air (25) having absorbed a heat of sensible cooling and heat of condensation. The reheated air (25) then passes into a first turbine (26) which recovers a heat of sensible cooling and heat of condensation. The first turbine (26) expands the air, which then flows into the subcooler heat exchanger (23) and into a second turbine (32) for additional recovery of a heat of sensible cooling and heat of condensation. The second turbine (32) cools the air by expansion for delivery to an enclosure to be conditioned.

    • An environmental control system (200) is provided. The environmental control system may receive pressurized air from a single supply line (220). A pressure regulating turbomachine (230) may be located within the supply line. A motor-generator (232) may be coupled to the pressure regulating turbomachine. In response to a pressure in the supply line being less than a desired pressure in the environmental control system, the motor-generator (232) may supply energy to the pressure regulating turbomachine, causing the pressure regulating turbomachine to function as a compressor. In response to a pressure in the supply line being greater than a desired pressure in the environmental control system, the pressure regulating turbomachine may function as a turbine and supply energy to the motor-generator.
