    • A self-sealing catheter valve (1,19) includes a flexible tubular part (2) having a distal opening (6) and an opposite proximal opening (12), and a proximal valve part (5). The proximal valve part (5) has a curved self-sealing flexible diaphragm (7) disposed inside the flexible tubular part (2) and has a base perimeter (8) united with a circumferential wall (9) of the flexible tubular part (2). The curved self-sealing flexible diaphragm (7) has a concave surface (11) facing towards the proximal opening (12), and a convex surface (10) facing towards the distal opening (6), and a flexible diaphragm wall (14) of the curved self-sealing flexible diaphragm (7) has a traverse slit (15). The self-sealing catheter valve provides an efficient self-closing mechanism for a peripheral catheter assembly and constitutes an efficient barrier against potential contagious spread from the patient to the surrounding environment by blood born disease e.g. HIV, hepatitis and Ebola viruses.

    • A sphincter valve (11) for controlling the flow of fluid through a fluid delivery line has a body (12) molded of a unitary piece of substantially flexible silicone material. The body is formed with an outer shell (17), and interior tube (18) disposed within said outer shell, an end portion (14), a pressure chamber (21) defined between the outer shell and the interior tube. A separate end cap (13) is secured to, and closes the end (24) of the body opposite the end portion thereof. A central passageway (27) extends through the interior tube, and through the ends of the valve. In use, the valve is spliced in a fluid delivery line, and the pressure chamber is coupled to a source of selectively deliverable pressurized air. When pressurized air is forced into the pressure chamber, the inward force created by the pressure collapses the interior tube onto itself shutting off flow through the valve.

    • The specification describes a thin-walled pressure sensitive section (53A) that may be incorporated into a blood tubing (53) and sealed in a housing (232) to provide: an adjustable resistance to flow, adjustable positive or negative pressure relief, positive or negative pressure isolation of pressure sensitive devices (e.g. pressure monitors) from the pumped fluid, controlled recirculation between the inlet and outlet of pumps, pressure regulation, and pressure sensitive reservoirs. It also allows for a simple and accurate method to set the occlusion of roller pumps. The thin wall section (53A) enables actuation of the various devices by balancing the flow or pressure of the blood in the extracorporeal circuit against a known or determinable pressure in the housing to open, close or modulate the valve. When the device is made from one continuous length of tubing, it has special advantages for extracorporeal circuits. Also described is an electromechanical control unit that utilizes said pressure signals to limit the blood flow within preset acceptable inlet and/or outlet pump pressure. A simple, compact and disposable system to adjust, regulate, and indicate negative or positive pressure applied to the valve is also disclosed. For compactness and clarity, the description is provided in the context of a roller pump for circuits used during cardiopulmonary bypass. The invention is also useful in other applications, such as dialysis, ultrafiltration, enteral feeding and organ preservation.
