    • One embodiment of the present invention relates to a technique for encoding a multi-plane image, which adaptively determines the order of encoding planes in accordance with the characteristics of an inputted image, and encodes the multi-plane image. An apparatus for encoding a multi-plane image comprises: a plane encoding order determining unit which adaptively determines, on the basis of encoding costs, the order of encoding a plurality of color planes inputted by a predetermined unit; and an encoding unit which encodes the plurality of color planes, inputted by the predetermined unit, in accordance with the determined order. The apparatus of the present invention adaptively determines the order of encoding planes in accordance with the characteristics of an inputted image, and encodes the multi-plane image, and therefore provides further improved encoding efficiency as compared to conventional apparatuses which encode images in a fixed order, and provides further improved encoding efficiency, particularly when predictions on the planes are performed.

    • The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for image encoding/decoding using a toolset. The present invention provides an image-encoding method which involves encoding images of encoding units in accordance with a plurality of encoding schemes contained in an encoding toolset, selects one encoding scheme from among the plurality of encoding schemes for each of the encoding units, outputs image data encoded in accordance with the selected encoding scheme, stores the frequency of selection of the encoding scheme selected for each of the encoding units, determines whether or not to update the encoding toolset on the basis of the frequency of selection of the encoding scheme and/or the encoding cost for the selected encoding scheme, and updates the encoding toolset. According to the present invention, a high-efficiency image-encoding scheme can be selected and image encoding can be performed while reducing not only the amount of calculation or complexity in the implementation of a system required for selecting the high-efficiency encoding scheme, but also the amount of bits required for encoding additional information for indicating the selected encoding scheme, thereby improving compression efficiency and simplifying the implementation of the system.
