    • Systems and techniques are disclosed relating to communications. The systems and techniques involve measuring a quality of a transmission from a remote location, identifying a data rate as a function of the measured quality, the identified data rate being capable of supporting a plurality of packet lengths, selecting one of the packet lengths as a function of a parameter of the measured quality, and providing feedback to the remote location, the feedback relating to the data rate and the selected one of the packet lengths.     • Techniques to increase capacity in a wireless communications system. In an aspect, systematic non-transmission, or "blanking," of minimal-rate frames transmitted in a communications system is provided. In an exemplary embodiment, eighth rate frames in a cdma2000 voice communications system are systematically substituted with null-rate frames carrying zero traffic bits. Provisions are nevertheless made for the transmission of certain designated as "critical" by, e.g., a vocoder. The receiver detects the presence of null rate or non-null rate transmissions and processes the received frames accordingly, including updating an outer loop power control only in response to non-null rate frames. Further techniques for changing the pilot transmission gating pattern to assist the receiver in detecting null rate frames are provided. In another aspect, early termination of a signal transmission over a wireless communications link is provided. In an exemplary embodiment, a base station (BS) transmits power control groups (PCG's) for a frame over a forward link (FL) to a mobile station (MS) until accurate reception of the frame is acknowledged by the MS over a reverse link (RL), possibly before all PCG's of the frame are received over the FL. Possible ACK signaling methods are defined for channels associated with a cdma2000 wireless communications system. In another exemplary embodiment, techniques for reverse link early termination are also provided.

    • A method and apparatus for controlling the transmit power of a plurality of mobile radio units (800) transmitting to a base station (900) in a mobile radio telephone system. For each of the mobile units (800) in the system, a signal strength estimate is measured at the base station (900) based on reverse link signals sent from the mobile units (800) and received at the base station (900), wherein each signal strength estimate is associated with one of the mobile units (800). The signal strength estimate associated with each mobile unit (800) is compared to a threshold. Next, for each mobile unit (800) in the plurality of mobile units (800), if the signal strength estimate associated with the mobile unit (800) is greater than the threshold, then a power control bit having a first value is assigned to the mobile unit (800); conversely, if the signal strength estimate associated with the mobile unit is less than the threshold, then a power control bit having a second value is assigned to the mobile unit (800). A variable gain that is a function of the difference between the signal strength estimate associated with the mobile unit (800) and the threshold is next applied to each power control bit. The variable gain applied to each power control bit increases as the magnitude of the difference between the signal strength estimate associated with the mobile unit (800) and the threshold increases. Each gain-adjusted power control bit is then transmitted to the mobile units (800).
