    • A compound represented by the following general formula (I): (I) (A) {wherein R 1 , R 3 , R 6 , and R 8 each represents methyl, etc.; R 2 and R 7 each represents cyano, etc.; R 4 and R 5 each represents fluorine, etc.; and X represents a group represented by the formula (A) [wherein R 11 is monocarboxylated C 1-8 alkoxy, etc.; R 12 , R 14 , and R 15 each is hydrogen, etc.; and R 13 is hydroxy, etc.], provided that these substituents are present in such a combination that the compound represented by the formula (I) is substantially nonfluorescent before reaction with a peroxynitrite and the compound represented by the formula (I) becomes, through reaction with a peroxynitrite, a compound which has the group represented by the formula (A) in a nitrated form and is substantially highly fluorescent} or a salt of the compound. The compound and salt are useful as a fluorescent probe for peroxynitrite detection.
