    • In a message routing method an application or device sends a message in a mobile network, the message having a status report request. The message is delivered via network elements including a router, and the router routs a status report to the originating device or application which can not accept it. The router communicates with a message service centre having store-and-forward capability, and the message service centre performs a re-try of sending the status report to the originating device or application. The status report may be embedded in an otherwise conventional message to the service centre, which may for example be an SMSC. The status report may be embedded in a conventional SMC-MO PDU, without affecting the GSM or other network protocol.

    • A message router comprises a message controller with service logic functions, and a state database. It receives and processes message segments, maintains state of single and concatenated messages, and applies services to the messages. A routing and discrimination engine accesses a selected state database among an associated database and distributed state databases. The controller operates in a transparent-relay mode in which a message is relayed to a network element and the response from the network element is returned directly to an originator. The relaying may be performed using SCCP relaying. The controller can operate in a transparent- proxy mode in which it generates a fresh message and sends it to a network element and receives the response from the network element, and in turn returns a response to the originator.

    • A messaging system has messaging devices (1) and a "comprehensive messaging server"' ("CMS", 10).     • A service management framework operates in a communication network having a service delivery infrastructure providing services to subscribers. The framework collects service delivery data from the network and analyses the data to dynamically and pre-emptively modify the service delivery infrastructure to optimise service delivery. The analysis involves performing, using subscriber profiles, subscriber segmentation to generate segmentation models representing behavioural characteristics of subscribers. It also involves deriving service predictive models from the segmentation models and collected network infrastructure data, said service predictive models correlating service demand levels and network infrastructure utilisation. The framework determines in response to the predictive models the actions to be taken.     • A message processing system is a server (1) incorporating software functions (15) which operate without user intervention to intercept (16, 17) SMS text messages, to translate the original text content in the short message body to compress it, and to forward the converted message on in the network. The content compression frees up space, and some or all of this space may be taken up by addition of tagging information such as text tags or sponsored or advertising content or user data header (UDH) information elements. The translator is part of a message converter (15) and parses the content and identifies candidate words for translation, and then iterates over the content, replacing the candidate word to allow the addition of one or more text tags to the message. The translation could be performed on just enough words and phrases to free up the required space, or it could be on the message as a unit, so as it give it uniformity of presentation. In one aspect, the invention has the major advantage of achieving compression of content to free up space for other information, but not having any impact on downstream network elements or the recipient device or application. It is completely transparent to the receiving device or application.
