    • A method for making a lighting apparatus includes providing a substrate and disposing a light emitting diode overlying the substrate. The light emitting diode has a top surface oriented away from the substrate and a plurality of side surfaces. A light conversion material is provided that includes a substantially transparent base material and a wave shifting material dispersed in the base material. The concentration of the wave shifting material can be at least 30%. In an embodiment, the concentration of the wave shifting material can be approximately 50% or 70%. A predetermined amount of the light conversion material is deposited on the top surface of the light emitting diode while the side surfaces are maintained substantially free of the light conversion material.

    • A color temperature tunable white light source comprises: first and second LED arrangements operable to emit light of first and second wavelength range respectively that are configured such that their combined light output, which comprises light generated by the source, appears white in color. One or both LED arrangements comprises a phosphor provided remote to an associated LED operable to generate excitation radiation and to irradiate the phosphor such that it emits light of a different wavelength range, wherein the light emitted by the LED arrangement comprises the combined light from the LED and phosphor. The color temperature of output white light is tunable by controlling the relative light outputs of the LED arrangements by for example controlling the relative magnitude of the drive currents of the LEDs or a duty cycle of a pulse width modulated drive current.

    • An LED assembly including an array of LEDs and lens disposed adjacent light emitting surfaces of the LEDs. The area of a cross-section of the lens projected onto the light emitting surface of the LED is substantially equal to or less than the area of the LED's light emitting surface. At least one lens is associated with each LED and the area of a cross-section of each lens projected onto the light emitting surface of its associated LED is substantially equal to or less than the surface area thereof.
