    • Apparatus for the continuous extrusion of metals in which feed is introduced into two (or more) spaced apart circumferential grooves (4) in a rotating wheel (2) (or rotating wheels) to contact an arcuate shoe portion (8) and abutments extending into the grooves. The feed is constrained by the abutments to flow through frusto-conical exit apertures (10) in the shoe portion (8) to a chamber (6) and is extruded as relatively thin-walled, large cross-section, product. The exit apertures (10) have cone angles in the range 5°-45°. Mixer plates (14) are profiled to distribute flow evenly from the apertures (10) to around the die opening (30). An extrusion die body (18) for cylindrical extrusions is located and axially centered by set screws (122). Where an even number of grooves (4) are utilised, an extrusion mandrel (12) may be secured to the shoe portion (8) by a bolt (22) positioned centrally of the grooves. Lubricant or oxidation inhibiting fluids may be injected internally of the extruded product through a passage (36, 38) extending through the shoe portion (8) and the bolt (22). In another embodiment, the chamber (6) is also of divergent frusto-conical form having a cone angle corresponding to that of the apertures (10), thereby enabling the extrusion of even larger cross-section products. The frusto-conical form may be of elliptical cross-section to achieve a requisite divergence or to accord with the configuration of the die orifice. By providing spaced apart grooves (4) and apertures (10) diverging frusto-conically it is possible to extrude products of relatively large cross-section since the volume feed rate is enhanced and the distance travelled by the material from the grooves (4) to the die orifice (30) is reduced, thereby reducing friction losses and the likelihood of discontinuities in the extrudate arising.

    • An extrusion mandrel assembly for continuous extrusion apparatus has a lobed, mushroom shaped, dolly (28) formed with a central spacing stem (30) located in the chamber (16) adjacent a pair of discharge ports (27) connecting respective exit apertures (10) into an internal cavity in the chamber (16) and a pair of shaped lobes (32) having rear faces (34) extending from the central spacing stem (30), outer edge portions (36) and front faces merging inco a collar (38) around a neck (40) co-acting with an annular shoulder (42) on the extrusion die body (20) to form an annular extrusion gap (44), with each of the lobes (32) being profiled such that frictional surface drag on extruding material is substantially uniform around the lobed dolly (28). Individual paths between the discharge ports (27) and the annular extrusion gap (44) are substantially equal in length as measured on the respective surfaces of the rear faces, edge portions and front faces of the profiled lobes (32). An extruded aluminium cylindrical tube of up to 150mm diameter and wall thickness in the range from lmm to 4mm may be formed avoiding discontinuities.

    • A tooling assembly for a continuous extrusion apparatus includes a die top (22) positioned in a shoe (8) arranged to be urged into contact with a rotating wheel (2) having a circumferential groove (26). An abutment body (24) is positioned as a sliding fit in a recess (30) provided in the die top (22) and is formed with a spine (44) arranged to project into the circumferencial groove (26) and with shoulders (46) flanking the spine arranged to co-act with the cylindrical surface (50) of the wheel (2) adjacent an abutment face (48). The abutment face (48) lies in a plane inclined slightly to an axial plane through the wheel and the faces (34, 36) on the abutment body (24) seating on faces (38, 40) of the recess (30) are aligned such that forces arising during extrusion act to urge the abutment body (24) into the recess (30). Where the wheel (2) is formed with a plurality of circumferential grooves (26), either a corresponding plurality of abututment bodies (24) and associated recesses (30) in the die top (22) are provided or a composite abutment body (24) having spines (44) and shoulders (46) formed as lands intermediate the spines seating in a single recess in the die top is provided. The spine (44) and shoulders (46) are of a linear form, thereby facilitating manufacture. In addition, replacement of the abutment is greatly facilitated in comparison with previous arrangements in which the abutment was integral with, or bolted to, the die top (22).
