    • A delay correction circuit includes a source (15) of a clock signal and a source (5) of a timing signal asynchronous with the clock signal. A timing signal detector (10) is responsive to the clock signal and the timing signal, and is properly operative only when the timing signal is stable for a predetermined time period around the clock signal. A control circuit (70) conditions utilization circuitry (80) to operate after a delay time after the timing signal is detected. Adjusting circuitry (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60) conditions the control circuit (70) to adjust the delay time if the timing signal was not stable within the predetermined time period.

    • A system and method for displaying still video images related to video content in an interactive broadcast television system. The system and method of the present invention may also be used for simulating an Internet home page on an interactive television system. The present invention thus supports hyperlinked web-like navigational capabilities in an interactive television system. According to the method of the present invention, the video delivery system provides or broadcasts one or more audio/video channels each comprising video content and also provides or broadcasts at least one still image channel comprising a plurality of still video images, preferably MPEG-2 compressed still images. The user or viewer can select options displayed on the television screen to view desired information. When the set top box receives user input selecting an option to view one of the linked still images, the set top box captures the requested image from the still image broadcast channel, stores the image in memory, and displays the captured still video image corresponding to the selection. The user can also request to view an image which is not currently being transmitted by the video delivery system. In this instance, the system provides user requested still images "on demand" on a dedicated "search" channel. The user can thus selectively navigate between the video content and stills in a web-like hyperlinked fashion.

    • Apparatus for combining an auxiliary image and a main image includes a source of a main image video signal and a source of samples representing an auxiliary image video signal having successive fields. A quincunx subsampler is coupled to the auxiliary image sample source and subsamples the auxiliary image samples in either a first sample pattern in which samples are taken at a first set of horizontal locations, or a second sample pattern in which samples are taken at a second set of horizontal locations substantially midway between the first set, all in response to a control signal. A signal combiner is coupled to the quincunx subsampler and the main image signal source, and combines the main image signal and a signal representing the quincunx subsampled auxiliary image samples to generate a signal representing a combine image of the main and auxiliary images. A control circuit generates the quincunx subsampler control signal so that the quincunx subsampler takes samples in one of the sample patterns at the beginning of each auxiliary image video signal field, and in the other sample pattern after a switch time calculated so that the quincunx subsampled auxiliary image samples in the combined image all are taken by the same sample pattern.

    • A tuner (9) of a digital satellite television receiver comprises a single conversion stage which produces an IF signal at a low enough frequency to permit a SAW filter (913) to be used to perform symbol shaping as well as the normal IF filtering function. The local oscillator (911) is controlled by a phase locked loop tuning control IC normally used to control the local oscillator (911) of a tuner (9) of a conventional broadcast or cable television receiver. In an exemplary embodiment for tuning RF signals provided by a block converter (3) in the 950 to 1450 MHz frequency range, the IF has a center frequency of 140 MHz. A lithium tantalate SAW filter (913) is used in order to minimize shift of the IF center frequency with temperature and to provide the required relative IF bandwidth (i.e., the width of the IF passband divided by the IF center frequency).
