    • A downhole abrading tools has a body with a first end for connection with a rotating component of a drill string, and a cutting end for rotation in unison with the body, the cutting end having an abrading matrix containing an abrasive material for rotating engagement with an object within the well. The downhole abrading tool also includes a passage through the tool for circulating a drilling fluid. The abrading matrix includes at least one taggant embedded within the abrading matrix capable of being released by the abrading matrix into the downhole location due to wear on the abrasive material and transported to the surface location along with the drilling fluid for detection. When the taggant is released due to excessive wear, the taggant is carried from the downhole location in the well to the surface of the well where it can be detected by the operator of the tool.

    • The riser assembly (14) is plugged adjacent its bottom (20) end either as it is made up or after full makeup or anywhere in between. A heavy fluid (26) is either added to the riser string as it is made up or delivered into the string after makeup to displace seawater or other fluids that may have been in the riser as it is assembled. The floating rig (10) can be secured over the subsea well head (12) and the riser now full of heavy fluid is less prone to be displaced by wave action and preferably simply dangles straight down so that the connection to the subsea wellhead can be simply accomplished. The effect of wave action is minimized or eliminated when deciding placement of the floating rig with respect to the wellhead. Repositioning of the rig takes less effort and is needed less frequently.

    • A borehole plug or packer for treating is designed to be milled out after use. The plug handles differential pressure from above using a lower slip assembly under a sealing element. A setting tool creates relative axial movement of a setting sleeve and a plug mandrel to compress the seal against the surrounding tubular and set the slips moving up a cone against the surrounding tubular to define the set position for the plug. The set position is held by a split lock ring having a wedge or triangular sectional shape and a surface treatment facing the mandrel that slides along the mandrel during setting movement but resists opposed reaction force from the compressed sealing element. The surface treatment can be a series of downhole oriented ridges such as a buttress thread that preferably penetrate the mandrel when holding the set position.
