摘要： A non-blocking crossbar switch architecture is disclosed that circumvents the problem present in prior art crossbar switches where input signals may oversubscribe the available inter-die bandwidth. The new non-blocking crossbar switch architecture is split across a plurality of semiconductor dice, including a plurality of interleaved crossbar switch segments. Only one crossbar switch segment is implemented on each semiconductor die. A plurality of input ports and output ports are coupled to the crossbar switch. The crossbar switch is non-blocking, i.e. any one output port not currently receiving data may receive data from any one input port.

摘要： The outside distribution plant of the invention consists of a remote terminal such as a digital loop carrier, broadband distribution element or the like that receives telecommunications signals from a switching system or other network element. The signals are delivered to a variety of different types of line cards where each of the different types of line cards provide a different type of telecommunications service as is known in the prior art. Connection lines emanating from the line cards are connected to the inputs of a remotely controlled crossbar array where the inputs of the array can be selectively connected to the outputs of the crossbar array. The outputs of the crossbar array are connected to distribution lines that terminate at one of a plurality of feeder distribution interfaces that connect to customer lines that terminate at customer premise equipment. By properly configuring the crossbar array, the line cards can be connected to any of the feeder distribution interfaces such, that any customer line has access to any available line card. In this manner the network resources can be efficiently distributed among the customer lines.

A system backplane includes a large number of connectors that each can receive a subscriber printed circuit card which is connectable to subscriber telephone equipment. Each connector is connected to several separate communication buses that each carry a number of communication channels from the fiber optic system, but a primary bus position of each connector is connected to a single, unique bus. This allows each card to have a dedicated bus for up to the number of communication channels of the bus, with additional channel capacity available from primary buses of other connectors, if necessary.
