    • An apparatus and method for maximizing the shear wave energy imparted into the soil upon the impacting of a base plate by an impact mass from a seismic generator. A seismic generator is disposed at an angle relative to a line generally perpendicular to the surface to the ground. The angle varies with soil conditions and the angle is determined by locating an accelerometer on the base plate of the generator and observing the horizontal acceleration rate as indicated by the accelerometer. If the acceleration rate exceeds a predetermined value, the anguular disposition of the generator s changed to decrease the angle either manually or automatically until the acceleration rate no longer exceeds a predetermined value.

    • A device for generating elliptically polarized shear waves for introduction into a soft earth medium including marshy and water-covered earth surfaces. The device consists of a shear wave generator coupled to a coupling tube having a conical lower end that is maintained in energy-coupling relationship within the earth medium. Shear waves such as elliptically generated shear waves are introduced into the tube member for travel along the tube and further earth coupling about the bottom cone member as it is progressively driven into the earth medium. Suitable hold-down weight is utilized to maintain most effective coupling pressure on the cone member, and, support equipment, either land or marine vehicle, may include crane and alignment structure for continually maintaining the tubular vibrator member in proper vertical attitude during operation.

    • A vibratory seismic surface source includes a single vibrating mass, supported above and independently of an earth-contacting base plate. Means are provided for varying the inclination and azimuth of the vibrator axis. After the vibrator is oriented in any desired direction, it is then lowered along its vibratory axis so that it bears directly against the hemispherically concave upper surface of the base plate. When the vibrator is actuated in this position of contact, any desired combination of compressional and shear waves, both SH and SV type, may be generated and recorded simultaneously at a point on the earth's surface remote from the source.

    • The preferred embodiment of this invention includes a logging sonde, an elongated pair of oppositely polarized piezoelectric plates connected to each other by their flat surfaces, and an electrical pulse applying means for applying electrical pulses across the pair of plates so as to bend and vibrate the plates in a direction perpendicular to the length of the plates. Vibration of the plates in a fluid contained in a well creates in the fluid a positive compressional wave in one direction and simultaneously a negative compressional wave in the opposite direction. The two compressional waves will interfere to produce a dipole shear wave in the earth surrounding the well. The dipole shear wave arrival is detected at two locations in the fluid spaced longitudinally along the well from each other and from the plate. The ratio of the time interval between the detections of the dipole shear wave arrival at the two locations to the distance between the two locations yields the shear wave velocity of the earth around the well. The length of the plates may be selected to generate dipole shear waves with frequencies in a preferred range so as to improve shear wave signal to compressional wave noise ratio.

A gasket material between the slug and an inner holding tube assists in avoiding the propagation of undesirable compressional wave energy into transmission medium surrounding the transducer. Electrical isolation is achieved by wrapping the inner tube with a ground shield to which the ground wire is attached. A second layer of gasket material between the inner and an outer tube further inhibits the propagation of compressional wave energy into the transmission medium. A flexible potting compound seals the open end of the tubes including the bimorph element and serves as the active face of the transducer.

    • A rotating eccentric weight apparatus and method for generating coded shear wave signals for use in seismic exploration. The apparatus includes a rotatable eccentric and a position sensor capable of detecting each instant that the eccentric passes a particular angular position about its axis of rotation and generating a code signal for use in correlating the raw seismic data obtained. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes an outrigger shovel which transmits a sinusoidal shear wave signal generated by the rotating eccentric while the rest of the apparatus is caused to alternately decouple from and impact against the earth surface to transmit a coded train of pressure wave impulses into the earth.
