    • A duo-servo drum brake (10) includes an application adjuster mechanism (50). A cable mechanism (60) has one end connected to the anchor pin (40) of the duo-servo drum brake (10) and the other end has a spring member (44) connected with a lever (80) of the adjuster mechanism (50). The lever (80) has a figure-eight shaped opening (81) receiving the button (64) so that the lever (80) is rotatably mounted thereto, with an end part (87) engaging the starwheel (70) and an opposite end having an opening (84) receiving the spring member (44). The lever (80) includes another opening (85) which receives an end (94) of the torsion spring (90).

    • An improved drum brake assembly in which brake shoes are mounted on a backing plate and coact with a rotating brake drum mounted on an axle and in which a mechanical brake adjuster has a movable component for adjusting the running clearance of the brake shoes, in which the brake drum has an adjustment access opening formed in its generally radial portion and in spaced relation to the brake backing plate. This access opening is alignable with the movable component of the brake adjuster by rotating the brake drum on the axle so as to position the access opening in opposed relation to the position of the movable component. The access opening is sized so as to provide for the insertion of a brake adjusting tool from a position adjacent the lateral side of the drum to engage the movable component, for the purpose of adjusting the shoes, and obviating the necessity of moving under the vehicle to access the movable component through the conventional access hole formed in the backing plate. The access opening is formed as an arcuately elongated slot, the long walls of which provide a convenient pry surface for the brake adjusting tool.

    • An automotive drum brake assembly includes first and second brake shoes mounted on a backing plate. A wheel cylinder for braking actuation is mounted between the brake shoes. An adjuster screw assembly is held between the brake shoes by an adjuster spring. The adjuster screw assembly includes a pivot nut threaded onto an adjuster screw. In one embodiment, a sleeve includes a first portion slidably mounted on the pivot nut, a second ramp portion covering the screw threads and a third portion opposite the pivot nut. The second portion, preferably formed as a frustoconical ramp, is slid by the adjuster spring to travel with the adjuster screw as it unthreads from the pivot nut, thereby shielding threads from corrosive elements.

An opposing pair of brake shoe ends (26, 28) have adjacent thereto a combination drum brake shoe hold-down bracket and cable guide (60) attached to the backing plate (11) . The hold-down bracket and cable guide (60) has a pair of securement portions (61) extending laterally or transversely, via axial projections (62) and ends (64) , relative to the center of revolution (A) of the drum brake (10) and which engage the drum brake shoe webs (16, 18) to assist in maintaining the brake shoes (12, 14) in operative position. Each portion (61) of the hold-down bracket and cable guide (60) extends laterally toward one another via an axially extending portion (65) that curves in an annular path to form a center portion (67) that defines a cable guide path (68). A parking brake cable assembly (40) is captured within the cable guide path (68) so that it will not interfere with other brake components. The brake shoe hold-down bracket and cable guide (60) provides a positive method for preventing the brake shoes (12, 14) from lifting off the backing plate (11) and guiding the parking brake cable assembly (40).

The carrier wheel can be turned relative to the pinion an angular distance corresponding to the desired slack and is biassed to one end position by a torsion spring (17), which is also used to engage a one-way clutch (19) between the carrier wheel and the control screw.
