    • An escape system for a building, including a belting ladder formed by an endless band of a flat flexible reinforced belting material with a plurality of longitudinally-spaced apertures each with a substantially transverse edge portion forming rung-like features therealong for human engagement, and a control apparatus having (a) a support structure mountable to the building, the support structure having a central shaft and a rotatable pulley member secured thereto with the endless band therearound, (b) a speed limiter mounted with respect to the main shaft for restraining rotation of the pulley member during human descent by belt movement. In some embodiments, the control apparatus also includes a winder device adjacent to the pulley member and having at least one winder rod engageable with the belt and orbitable with an engaged portion thereof about the pulley member.

    • This invention is directed to a device for securing a step of a rope ladder to the rope. The device includes an upper and a lower wedge collar, each of which has a central slot through which the ropes to be secured are threaded. The device further includes a diamond-shaped wedge heart which is inserted in the slot between the ropes such that the ropes are compressed between the sides of the wedge collars and the edges of the wedge heart. The wedge heart also has locking lugs on each edge, each locking lug contacting a surface of the upper and the lower wedge collar to prevent the wedge heart from being pulled through the slot in the wedge collars when pressure is applied to the ropes.

    • A rope ladder in which the steps have a metal frame comprising a pair of longitudinal members joined by a pair of shorter transverse members spaced in from the ends and strengthened by a pair of diagonal members. At each end a metal bracket bridges across the frame and provides an elevated upper plate portion which defines a generally rectangular opening. A molded hard elastomer body is molded around the frame and has a collar portion at each end molded around the bracket. The body has a downwardly and outwardly flaring through opening in line with the bracket opening and vertical bolt openings therethrough adjacent each through opening. A separate wedge collar for each step has a tapered through opening going down to a narrow lower end. A generally diamond-shaped wedge heart in between each pair of ropes provides two rope-engaging side grooves for locking the pair of ropes in place and preventing relative movement between the ropes and the step, when fastening means extending through the bolt openings are tightened in place.

    • A flexible embarkation-debarkation marine ladder having a pair of flexible wire rope suspension members. A plurality of steps are secured to the suspension members at spaced intervals. The steps include a pair of ears. The opposite ends of the rungs are secured to the ears in spaced relationship. Each ear includes a tubular sleeve extending perpendicularly to and in aligned relationship to the spacing between the rungs. The suspension member extends coaxially through the sleeves. A plurality of constrictible annular stops are fixed to the suspension member at the opposite ends of the sleeves to lock the steps to the suspension member in parallel, spaced relationship. In another form, the marine ladder suspension members are formed of a pair of fiber ropes. The fiber ropes extend through rectangular tubular sleeves which are fixedly secured to the ears as by welding. The steps and spreader arms of the fiber rope ladder are secured to the fiber rope elements by constrictible sleeves above and below the sleeves of the respective step and spreader arm mounting structures.
