    • The invention provides a range of modified organoclays comprising intercalated moieties to provide an effective mechanism for attracting organic compounds into the interlamellar spaces in close proximity to other intercalated reactants. The intercalated moieties provide three functions, namely (a) pillaring to create adequate interlamellar spacing to provide access for larger molecules, e.g. polychlorinated biphenyls and poly aromatic hydrocarbons, (b) organophilic attraction of like polarity organic compounds, and (c) a reactive environment in which the organic substrates can be permanently bonded to the clay surfaces and pillaring agents. The invention also resides in methods of treating soil or other materials with such modified organoclays in order to remove or bind hazardous organic molecules.

    • A machine (13) for the continuous casting of structural concrete walls (10) has a chassis (19) mounted on tracks (20). A telescopic boom (26) is mounted for buffing movement on a work platform (21) mounted for slewing movement relative to the chassis (19). Sensors on the work head (30) detect the beams from rotating laser and a fixed laser which defines the datum and line for the wall and the operation of the machine ( 13) is controlled by a computer which controls the orientation and advance of the work head unit (38) and the advance of the machine (13).

    • The invention relates to a barrier for soil structures. The barrier is formed by creating a trench in a soil structure extending from the soil surface to an impervious layer in the soil. The trench is lined with a sheet of impervious material, which may be a fabric carrying a substantially dehydrated sodium-bentonite clay. The trench is especially well-suited for installation around the perimeter of a waste site from which contaminated fluids may be emanating. The barrier and the method of forming the barrier allow a toxic waste site to be easily and completely isolated from adjacent groundwater systems.
