    • A method of insertion of the weft thread into the shed of an air-operated jet loom in which a main stream of air supplied to an end of a direct pick channel in a swinging loom reed is supplemented at regular length intervals along the whole length of the direct pick channel by ancillary air streams oriented obliquely in the direction of the weft thread insertion into an open side of the direct pick channel through which the air streams move the weft thread. A device for carrying out the above method of insertion of the weft thread into the shed of a loom has a loom reed adapted to swing on an axis and is equipped with a direct pick channel, with a main pick jet related thereto on one lateral side, and with a plurality of ancillary jets situated at uniform intervals along its length and each ancillary jet having an outlet apertures oriented obliquely into the open side of the pick channel of the loom reed.

    • A melt spinning apparatus is disclosed which is adapted for dividing a molten polymer into a plurality of streams to form synthetic filaments. The apparatus comprises a spin block assembly having two opposite sides, and two separate heating chambers disposed adjacent respective ones of the sides of the spin block assembly. The two heating chambers are interconnected by threaded members, so that the opposing surfaces of the chambers may be drawn together to clampingly engage the opposite sides of the spin block assembly therebetween. The formation of air gaps between the opposing surfaces, and which might hinder the heat transfer between the heating chamber and spin block, are thereby avoided. In one embodiment, the threaded members extend through spacers which are mounted between the heating chambers and between adjacent spin block assemblies, with the spacers being essentially thermally nonconductive, and so that substantially all the heat flow to each spin block assembly is received from the opposing side wall surfaces of the two heating chambers.

    • The present invention provides an improved process for extruding liquid crystal polymer. The process comprises the steps of providing a fluid stream of liquid crystal polymer wherein the stream has a flow pattern comprising substantial shear flow; converting the flow of the fluid stream of liquid crystal polymer to a substantially elongational flow in the substantial absence of shear flow; and extruding the fluid stream of liquid crystal polymer to form a shaped article having the polymer molecules oriented substantially parallel to the flow direction. The resulting articles are self-reinforcing, having mechanical properties superior to conventional extruded liquid crystal polymer articles and comparable to those of articles formed from fiber-reinforced isotropic polymeric materials. In a preferred embodiment, the flow of the fluid stream of liquid crystal polymer is converted to a substantially elongational flow by passing the fluid stream of liquid crystal polymer through at least one grid having a plurality of converging passages (e.g., cone-shaped or trumpet-shaped holes).
